Creative Arts Emmys: 7 races to watch

The Creative Arts Emmys, now officially referred to as “Emmys Night 1” and “Emmys Night 2,” have never been more consequentially. Outside of the still-questionable category shifts that moved some of the Limited/TV Movie honors out of the telecast (thus forcing the rebrand), the preliminary evenings of awards could have even bigger implications for the main show than usual.

There’s the incredibly tight race for Limited Series, which will ultimately be decided at the main show, but that has some key indicator awards at the Creative Arts. There’s Comedy Guest Actor, which will see two television titans (one sadly passed) competing head-to-head. Then you’ve got a Comedy Guest Actress race that could serve as a bellwether for the entire genre heading into the telecast.

Here are the seven races to watch at the Creative Arts Emmys.

Comedy Guest Actress

A four-time nominee, Kaitlin Olson has never won an Emmy. Despite three noms for playing Deborah Vance’s daughter, DJ, the Hacks regular has come up short, which may be why the Gold Derby odds are favoring her in the HBO Max series’s last year of eligibility. But on the horizon is the potential tidal wave coming from Team Widow’s Bay. Betty Gilpin, also a four-time nominee, could be the first domino to fall in a Widow Bay upset on the night of the telecast.

Comedy Guest Actor

Over on the male side of the Comedy Guest performances, Michael J. Fox will face off again Rob Reiner. A decision between two such beloved figures couldn’t have been easy for the Television Academy members. There’s also a potential dark horse lurking in the form of another Widow’s Bay player, Hamish Linklater. But whatever happens, the presentation of the award is sure to be one of the biggest moments of this cycle.

Limited Series/TV Movie Writing

While the main prize for Limited Series continues to live over in the telecast portion of this year’s Emmys program, this could be the award the determines how that one shakes out. One only need to travel back to 2024 to see how a Limited field split between two series for writing and directing went down. Ripley won directing, but Baby Reindeer took writing — and more importantly, Best Limited Series.

A comedy legend regardless of his Emmys history, Martin Short has never won as a performer. And, while not exactly the nomination that best showcases his many talents, his stint as the host of Match Game could be a historic win for the funnyman.

This year, The Muppet Show returned, wowing fans of the original and newcomers alike, and yet, Disney still hasn’t officially ordered more episodes from Kermit and the gang. A win here — especially over Taylor Swift for a concert special very similar to one released three years ago — could be the extra push the House of Mouse needs to put those puppets to work.

One of the questions that has continued to cause head scratches at the Gold Derby offices is what to do about Documentary Series. Ken Burns’ The American Revolution has a decent-sized lead with nearly 60% odds of winning, but will the Television Academy really be able to say “no” to Marty? Mr. Scorsese is running too tight of a race to count it out at this point, so the category could make for one of the nights’ bigger surprises.
