The Rip’s Joe Carnahan recently signed on to direct Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming action-thriller with Netflix, The Operator. Wahlberg stars as an ex-Tier One Operator who is ordered to help his most hated target to safety, but the dangerous mission turns into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse for survival. Here’s everything we know about The Operator on Netflix.

The Operator is an upcoming Netflix Original action-thriller film directed by Joe Carnahan, who recently directed the streaming service’s smash-hit film, The Rip. The film is written by Harrison Query, who previously wrote Amazon Prime’s action-comedy Heads of State, and is the showrunner of Netflix’s upcoming crime-action series, Trigger Point.

The film is produced by Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona of The Picture Company, who are joined by Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson through Municipal Pictures, and Scott Glassgold of 12:01 Films.

What is the plot of The Operator?

We have a synopsis for the film reported by Deadline:

“The Operator follows an ex-Tier One Operator (Wahlberg) who earns a living as one of the CIA’s invisible clean-up men. When he’s ordered to shepherd his most hated target to safety, the mission turns into a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game for survival.”

Who are the cast members of The Operator?

The only confirmed cast member for the film so far is Mark Wahlberg, marking his 5th film for Netflix after Spenser Confidential, The Union, Me Time, and the upcoming film The Big Fix. The name of Wahlberg’s role has yet to be revealed. Wahlberg has been acting since the mid-1990s and has acted in films such as Boogie Nights, The Departed, Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes, Ted, Transformers, Uncharted, and many more.

Post-Production

At the time of writing, there are no filming dates for The Operator, and the film is currently in pre-production. With Wahlberg’s most recent film, The Big Fix, wrapping sometime in late July/early August, we’d expect to hear more about the production timeline soon.

When will The Operator be released on Netflix?

This largely depends on the production timeline. Once we have filming dates, we’ll have a better understanding of when the film will land on Netflix, and when the streaming service releases its film slate for 2027.
