Households using Roku televisions and Roku streaming players have begun reporting a strange new problem after the Roku OS 15.3 software update: devices turning themselves on in the middle of the night and launching a movie or television show without anyone touching a remote. For about a week now, Cord Cutters News has been receiving reports of the issues.
The behavior does not appear on every device that received the update. Some sets and players continue to sit quietly in standby. Others wake without warning, light up a dark living room or bedroom, and begin playback as if someone had pressed play. In several cases the sound and picture have been loud enough to wake people who had already gone to sleep.
Roku OS 15.3 began a limited public rollout in early August 2026 after a developer beta period in July. Official notes for the release focus on developer tools, including new caption placement options for non-fullscreen video, Double-precision fields in SceneGraph, and additional BrightScript functions. Nothing in those notes describes a change to power management or autoplay that would explain an unattended device starting a title at 2 a.m.
Sadly, the glitch is hitting TVs and streaming players at almost random, but a growing number of readers are reporting the issue.
Similar unexpected wake-ups have been reported on Roku hardware for years, usually tied to Fast TV Start, HDMI-CEC one-touch play, a stuck remote button, or a neighboring device sending a power command. Those older explanations do not fully match the current wave, which owners are tying specifically to the 15.3 install and to content actually starting rather than the screen simply coming on to the home menu.
Because the trigger is still unknown, there is no single confirmed fix. Owners who want to reduce the chance of another surprise have been turning off Fast TV Start under Settings, System, Power; disabling Control Other Devices (CEC) one-touch play; unplugging the player overnight; or powering the streaming stick from a wall adapter instead of a television USB port so the box is less tightly bound to the set’s standby state. A system restart from the same Power menu sometimes stops the behavior for a while. None of those steps has been proven to work for every affected device.
The issue is more than an annoyance. A television that comes on in a dark house can disturb sleep, startle pets, or play audio in a room where children are sleeping.
