Considering that the first season of Apple TV’s hit horror-comedy Widow’s Bay featured an ancient curse, a haunted hotel, a water demon, a book of witchcraft, a masked killer, psychedelic mushrooms, and detailed genealogical mapping, there was a lot of ground to cover when Gold Derby sat down with its Emmy-nominated cast.
Kate O’Flynn, Matthew Rhys, Dale Dickey, and Stephen Root were all on-hand to spill their guts about the making of the cult hit, and we did our best to squeeze as many details out of them as possible.
Watch our full video interview with the Widow’s Bay cast — including behind-the-scenes stories, their hopes for what may come next, and what it’s been like playing a part in the year’s biggest new comedy — and read some of the highlights below.
Kate O’Flynn’s Audition Redo
The actress behind fan-favorite Patricia, O’Flynn was the creative choice for the role, but need to do an additional audition for Apple… and it didn’t go as planned. “I got manic giggles at the like most important part,” she said. “We were like, ‘Keep it together because you’re like you’re nearly there. You nearly got it,’ and we both started cracking up. I mean, this is nothing new. This is my life.”
What’s Up With Wyck?
Something Root longs for in Season 2 is more backstory for his character, the Quint-like Wyck. “I would love to know what experiences he had that made him the guy he was,” Root said. “We can understand what he went through as a very young man would make him an alcoholic. But I would love to know what those experiences were, because by the time he gets to know this guy when he’s a teenager, he’s already pretty damaged by that.”
Rosemary’s “Dead Baby, Dead Baby, Lesbian”
An dramatic overhead projector presentation set the stage for the finale, and it required more than just memorizing a lot of dialogue for Dickey. “What any of us didn’t realize is the audiovisual — it’s upside-down,” Dickey said.
“And reversed!” Rhys added.
