‘Furious’ Star Lola Petticrew Credits Castmate Steve Way For Bringing Much-Needed Levity To The Series: “He Had Me In Fits Of Laughter Every Day”

Ask any fan of Furious, Hulu‘s new serial killer drama, and they will tell you that the one thing the show needs every now and again is a moment of serious levity. Enter comedian and actor Steve Way.

**Spoilers ahead for Furious Episode 6, now streaming**

In the Liz Meriwether-created drama, Way stars as Alden, a wheelchair-bound home-health client of Catherine (Lola Petticrew), whom she also happens to be dating. While the subject material of the series can get extremely dark and violent from episode to episode — thankfully, Way’s character is there to relieve some of the stress and make everyone laugh, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

“Steve is truly a phenomenal actor and I’m so glad that we got to work that closely. And not only is he an incredible actor, but he’s an awesome human being, and he had me in fits of laughter every day,” Petticrew tells DECIDER in an interview for the show. “You know, he’s a comedian. Steve wears many hats: he’s a writer, he’s a comedian, he is an actor, he is anything that he wants to be.”

In the most recent episode, Way’s character is taken in for questioning in connection to a murder committed by Petticrew’s character, and he spends the entire episode trolling Danny (Scoot McNairy) and Agent Choi (Rob Yang), including pretending that Catherine’s tampons were his dead mother’s and repeatedly telling Danny and Choi that “all cops are bastards.” His refusal to cooperate is, of course, much to the dismay of the arresting officers but to the gratitude of the audience at home who watches as his character delivers zinger after zinger before being let go. It also serves a greater purpose for the story.

Previously, the series established that Alden is willing to do anything for Catherine, someone he truly loves and one of the few people in this world that Catherine still cares about. For Petticrew, knowing that dynamic is on the table between their characters offered them the opportunity to find the intricacies of that relationship and discover what can happen when you test the extremes of a push-and-pull like this… even if it means his covering up her bad deeds.

“For me, the relationship between Alden and Catherine is so special and definitely where I got to find like a lot of comfort,” Petticrew explains. “Building that with Steve was an incredible honor. The ideas that he came in with every day and like the way that he is able to sort of like take something that you’re pretty sure it can only be done one way, like surely this is the way this is, and then the total surprise. When he just does something totally different.”

And while this season, thus far, has included brutal murders, confrontations, exciting chases, and emotionally moving monologues delivered by Catherine and Alice (Emmy Rossum), Petticrew says that forming that special bond and finding the right notes to play with Way is certainly one of the best parts of their experience working on Furious.

“That was certainly a highlight of the job for me,” the actor shares.

The first six episodes of Furious Season 1 are now streaming on Hulu. New episodes release Mondays.

If you’re new to Hulu, the basic (with ads) price is $11.99/month. If you want to upgrade to Hulu ad-free, it costs $18.99/month.

If you want to stream even more and save a few bucks a month while you’re at it, we recommend subscribing to one of the Disney+ Bundles, all of which include Hulu. These bundles start at $12.99/month for ad-supported Disney+ and Hulu and goes up to $32.99/month for Disney+, Hulu, and Max, all ad-free.
