What Actually Happened at the End of ‘The End of Oak Street’?

This article contains spoilers for ‘The End of Oak Street’.

David Robert Mitchell spends most of The End of Oak Street asking audiences to accept one very simple premise: What if an ordinary suburban neighborhood suddenly had a dinosaur problem? The answer is considerably more complicated. Oak Street hasn’t simply been overrun by creatures from the past. The entire neighborhood has somehow been displaced millions of years into prehistoric Earth, leaving the Platt family and their neighbors desperately searching for a way home.

By the time they figure out that the strange glowing anomaly might be their ticket back, getting home isn’t the only thing Denise (Anne Hathaway) has to worry about. Her marriage to Greg (Ewan McGregor) was already falling apart before Oak Street disappeared, but surviving together gives them an opportunity to confront what went wrong between them. Unfortunately, they realize they still love each other just in time for Greg to be brutally killed by a dinosaur. Then Denise realizes going home might mean getting something even better than survival: a second chance.

The key to understanding the ending is that the anomaly doesn’t return Denise, Audrey (Maisy Stella), Brian (Christian Convery), and Jeannette (Jordan Alexa Davis) to the exact moment Oak Street disappeared. It sends them back shortly before it happens, giving them an opportunity to change the original timeline. That distinction is particularly important for Greg. The Greg who was chomped in half obviously didn’t make it back, but the version who hasn’t experienced any of it is still alive. Denise uses their knowledge of the original timeline to order a pizza, ensuring Greg is away from Oak Street and joining his family at the time the anomaly occurs. When he pulls up, he understandably has no idea why his family is so overwhelmed to see him, but they have every right to be emotional as they’ve only watched him die within the last few hours.

Denise realizes they can save their neighbors, too. She uses a payphone to warn several of them before Oak Street disappears, getting people who died in the prehistoric timeline away from the neighborhood. When the anomaly strikes again, Oak Street still disappears, but its residents aren’t there to go with it. The End of Oak Street doesn’t spend much time establishing airtight rules for any of this. What matters is that Denise has reached the past early enough to create a very different future.

‘The End of Oak Street’ Gives the Platts a Very Complicated Happy Ending

Two years later, the Platts are together again. Greg is alive, Denise has pursued her own ambitions, and she is preparing to publish a book appropriately titled The End of Oak Street. There’s just one fairly enormous complication: Greg doesn’t remember any of it. This Greg never had the conversations with Denise that helped repair their relationship. He never fought to protect his family in the prehistoric world, and he certainly doesn’t remember dying there. Denise has returned to the man she loves, but he isn’t quite the same Greg she lost, but evidence from that other life remains. The wonderfully ridiculous photograph of Greg posing in front of mating dinosaurs is hanging in their home, despite this Greg having no memory of taking it. Jeannette gives us an even clearer idea of what happened. The movie actually shows us two Jeannettes in the new timeline: the one who traveled back with the Platts and the version of Jeannette who was already alive at that point in history. The people who traveled through the anomaly have physically inserted themselves into a point where their younger counterparts already exist. Naturally, the movie doesn’t seem particularly worried about what having two Jeannettes running around means.

‘The End of Oak Street’ Isn’t Really About Time Travel or Dinosaurs

That might be the point. Mitchell isn’t ending The End of Oak Street with a carefully constructed time-travel puzzle. He’s using its completely bonkers science-fiction premise to give Denise something she couldn’t have gotten simply by escaping: the opportunity to make different choices. At the beginning of the movie, Denise’s marriage is crumbling, her own ambitions have been pushed aside, and the life she built isn’t the one she imagined. Losing Greg forces her to recognize what she still wants from their relationship, but getting him back doesn’t mean returning to exactly the same life. That’s why the reveal that Denise wrote The End of Oak Street matters. She remembers the Greg who died even if the man beside her doesn’t, and she refuses to let everything they experienced disappear with him. She turns their story into something tangible.

Does that leave questions about alternate timelines, duplicate people, and how a photograph of dinosaur sex survived all of this? Absolutely, but The End of Oak Street doesn’t seem particularly interested in answering them. For a movie that throws dinosaurs, wormholes, family drama, and just about every Spielbergian influence imaginable at the screen, its final idea is surprisingly simple. Denise can’t change what happened to the Greg she lost, but she can change what happens to him next. Sometimes a happy ending just requires breaking the space-time continuum first.
