Universal has Super Mario Bros., Warner Bros. has Minecraft, Paramount has Sonic the Hedgehog, Sony has Legend of Zelda, and Amazon has Fallout. Now, Disney is working on a new animated take on a blockbuster video game franchise.
The Mouse House announced at D23 on Friday that an original anime series inspired by Kingdom Hearts — the Square Enix game series that incorporates classic Disney toons in the gameplay — is in the works for the Disney Channel and Disney+. The series is being developed in partnership with video game creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix.
While details were kept under wraps, we learned that the series will feature a brand-new story that will expand on the game’s universe.
“There’s something really exciting about taking a world fans have spent years exploring through the games and bringing it to life in a completely new way,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family. “And with a creative team that is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, our new series will be unmistakably Kingdom Hearts, while giving fans a whole new way to experience the world they love.”
In addition to the series, there is a fourth installment of the game franchise on the way, which will feature new Disney characters, including some from Coco.
