Horror seems to be the perfect breeding ground for cult classic movies. Perfect examples include Dario Argento‘s Italian masterpiece Suspiria, the extreme, boundary-pushing Ichi the Killer, the Hollywood horror defining The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the hugely important zombie masterpiece Night of the Living Dead, and the horror musical blueprint The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Of all these, perhaps the most misunderstood masterpiece is Andrzej Żuławski‘s Possession, a mind-altering 1981 stroke of genius created by a man who poured his avant-garde heart and soul into this project. Featuring an all-time horror performance from Isabelle Adjani — without which we might not have had Inde Navarrette‘s star-making turn as Nikki Freeman in Obsession— as well as a note-perfect supporting turn from the late great Sam Neill, Possession is widely regarded as a film any budding horror fan must watch at least once to earn their stripes.
As with many of the best movies of yesteryear, Possession is officially getting the remake treatment courtesy of Paramount. The announcement was made in June 2024, when it was also confirmed that the remake would be helmed by talented director Parker Finn, who is best known for frightening global audiences with his Smile movies. In a new announcement, the Possession remake has been officially slated for release on June 11, 2027, where it will debut alongside Universal’s live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2. Following the success of this year’s Obsession, which is widely regarded as a spiritual successor to Possession, it’s no wonder that Paramount is offering the film a big summer slot.

The ‘Possession’ Remake Has Lined Up an Impressive Cast
As mentioned previously, the lead performances of the 1981 Possession are the stuff of horror legend. The task for whoever is stepping into these shoes is then anything but easy. But two hugely talented stars in The Substance‘s Margaret Qualley and the current front-runner for the new Bond, Callum Turner, are more than experienced enough to star, with it reported they are joined by the likes of Diego Calva, Madeline Brewer, Emory Cohen, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Paul Dano in as-yet-undisclosed roles. The Odyssey starRobert Pattinson is on board as a producer, ahead of his return as The Batman.
