‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Ending Explained: Does Helaena Die?

HBO‘s House of the Dragon Season 3 ends with one of the most tragic events in George R.R. Martin‘s Fire & Blood.

**Spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 8, now streaming on HBO Max**

Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) returns from the Great Sept — where she has declared war on the Faith of the Seven by killing the High Septon (Simon Chandler) — to discover that her sister, Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban), has died by suicide by leaping from the window in her chambers. Her death comes after weeks of horrible premonitions, her mother’s absence, Rhaenyra’s increased acts of cruelty, and an eerie warning from Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), who explains the queen will never let Helaena go.

“Helaena is sort of the moral heart of the show, I think. Maybe the only character who has a proximity to power but remains kind of uncontaminated,” House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy said in a virtual press conference on Friday. “So I think her death sort of condemns Rhaenyra to the path she’s chosen. I think there’s sort of no way back after that. There’s certainly no route back to a kind of more moderate form of leadership.”

“I don’t know where we go from here, but I imagine it’s likely to be impassable in her relationship with Alicent, which I think also means Helaena’s death kind of condemns Rhaenyra to be alone in her pursuit for power.”

Once Rhaenyra takes in her only sister’s violent death — Helaena’s fall leaves her impaled on spikes below, per Martin’s book — she then looks at the tapestry that she had been embroidering all season. The end of the tapestry depicts Helaena’s own death; she is almost swooning out the window. Rhaenrya then inspects the next image stitched into the fabric. Rhaenyra is on the Iron Throne, but is surrounded by dragons and flame. She appears to be stabbed in multiple spots. Blood flows from her body. Rhaenyra, too, is dead.

Instead of freaking out, Rhaenyra simply drops the fabric on the floor and shuts the window shutter, matter-of-factly.

“It’s funny, I was thinking about… Well, Rhaenyra, you know, her rejection of the Seven and murder of the High Septon and this attempt to reject other legitimizing institutions,” D’Arcy said. “And in a funny way, Helaena’s power of sight is another kind of sort of institution of legitimacy.”

“Yeah, I guess I just love the simplicity of looking at a document that could be hugely illuminating, but choosing to chuck it on the floor.”

So is this how Heleana dies in the books? How does Helaena die in House of the Dragon? And did she jump — like many fans theorize — from the same window that Tommen (Dean Charles Chapman) leaps from after Cersei (Lena Headey) blows up the Sept of Baelor in Game of Thrones?

Does Helaena Die in the House of the Dragon Season 3 Finale?

Yes, Helaena dies at the very end of House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 8 on HBO and HBO Max.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Ending Explained: How Does Helaena Die?

Helaena dies by suicide in House of the Dragon. After completely the intricate tapestry she has been embroidering, she gets up and walks to the large windows in her chamber. When Rhaenyra returns to the Red Keep, a devastated Elinda Massey (Jordan Stevens) calls out to her queen. Rhaenyra then looks out the open window and sees Helaena’s body impaled on the spikes below.

Is Helaena’s Death in House of the Dragon Different from What Happens in George R.R. Martin’s Books?

Helaena’s death in House of the Dragon mostly follows Helaena’s sad fate in Fire & Blood. In that book, she jumps — or is pushed! — to her death from the chamber window and is found impaled on spikes below. The only real difference between the book and show is the instigating factor.

Helaena is supposed to have three children in the books. When her youngest son Maelor, who is not in the show outside of her Season 3 pregnancy, is ripped to death by a mob hoping to impress Rhaenyra, she is so bereft, she then supposedly dies by suicide. (Again, some folks in the book speculate she may have been pushed, but the important details are the defenestration, fall, and impaling.)

George R.R. Martin infamously wrote a (now deleted) blog post in 2024 titled “Beware the Butterflies” that criticized House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal’s initial Season 3 draft for omitting Maelor from the show. According to Martin, “Helaena still kills herself… for no particular reason. There is no fresh horror, no triggering event to overwhelm the fragile young queen.”

I don’t know, getting abused and force fed and then warned you’ll never be free and also knowing your pregnancy will likely end in the murder of your newborn baby… Those are pretty triggering events. (Just one woman’s opinion!)

Tommen leaping to death in Game of Thrones

Did Helaena Jump From The Same Window as Tommen? House of the Dragon Showrunner Ryan Condal Weighs In:

Many fans have noticed that Helaena’s end echoes that of another tenderhearted royal character in the A Song of Ice and Fire canon. Tommen Baratheon also jumps to his death from an ornate window in the Red Keep during Game of Thrones.

Did Helaena and Tommen leap from the same window? Journalist Jamie East pressed House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal on this fan theory during Friday’s press conference.

Condal said, “I mean, it’s a different set built in a different world, but uh —”

“Just say yes,” Emma D’Arcy teased.

“Just say yes for Reddit,” East said.

“I mean, again, echoes and reflections and parallels for sure can be drawn between the two series,” Condal said.

So it’s not officially the same window, but the parallel is clear.
