You Probably Missed This Acclaimed Western Starring Two Beloved (And Award-Winning) Actors — It’s Now Streaming Free

When most of us think Westerns, we think gunfights on a dingy main street or ambushing outlaws out on the open plains. But you don’t always need these tropes to embody the spirit of the genre — especially now, during this heyday of the neo-Western. Sometimes, all it takes to create a Western is a lonely rancher searching for a place to call home again. And that’s exactly what makes Rebuilding such a knockout.

Despite starring award-winners Josh O’Connor and Amy Madigan — not to mention premiering to widespread critical acclaim in 2025 — you might not have heard of this one, but that’s okay. Max Walker-Silverman‘s contemporary cowboy picture slipped under the radar for most moviegoers. Not surprising, considering it played in just a few dozen theaters during its limited run last fall… a far cry from the thousands of theaters a wide release can provide. But lucky for indie fans and Western lovers, the film has found a second life: It’s now streaming free on Kanopy for anyone with a participating library card.

‘Rebuilding’ Is a Modern Western Story of a Different Sort

Written and directed by Max Walker-Silverman of A Love Song, Rebuilding opens after devastating wildfires have reduced cowboy Thomas “Dusty” Fraser Jr.’s family ranch to ashes. Losing a home is bad enough, but the ranch was so much more than that for O’Connor’s Dusty. It represented generations of history, identity, livelihood, a real way of life… gone. With nowhere else to go, Dusty finds himself living in a FEMA camp alongside dozens of other families displaced by the disaster.

At first glance, the setting couldn’t seem further removed from the sweeping frontier landscapes associated with classic Westerns. And yet, the film gets at something understated about the neo-Western genre: It’s always been rooted in modern stories of resilience against hostile forces, survival in the face of brutal conditions. Dusty’s plight is really no different than that of other Western heroes. It’s just that, instead of some crazed gunfighter seeking revenge on him, or his embarking on a grueling trek in search of lost fortune, Dusty’s greatest adversary might just be his own fate.

Rebuilding’s title has both a literal and figurative meaning. While, yes, Dusty’s homestead physically needs to be reconstructed, he also has to piece his relationships back together. That goes for both his young daughter, Callie Rose (Lily LaTorre), as well as his ex-wife Ruby (Meghann Fahy of The White Lotus). It’s a smart, contemporary take on Western storytelling: one that recognizes the American West might not be some untamed wilderness anymore, but that certain aspects of life on the frontier are still no less unforgiving today.

Josh O’Connor Isn’t the Only Reason ‘Rebuilding’ Deserves a Larger Audience

Fresh off the acclaimed run of films that has made him one of Hollywood’s most respected young actors, Josh O’Connor delivers one of the strongest performances of his career in the role of Dusty. Much like another overlooked entry in his 2025 filmography, the unfairly maligned The Mastermind, his performance has a certain sadness to it that O’Connor is exceptionally good at conveying. It’s a fragility that allows the grief and guilt and exhaustion of his character to show through the cracks.

Also worthy of note is Amy Madigan, seen here in a very different role than the one that won her the Oscar for 2025’s Weapons. Playing the grandmother to Dusty’s daughter Callie, Madigan’s performance complements O’Connor’s quite nicely. It’s a pleasant dose of warmth and wisdom that — alongside other players Fahy and Kali Reis — helps the supporting cast create a believable community of people processing their shared trauma in different ways.

Critics saw how accomplished the film was back at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and again at the 2025 Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Rebuilding stands at an impressive 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers praising everything from its emotional depth to O’Connor’s subtle lead performance. (It also earned a strong 75 on Metacritic, for those skeptical of the RT metric.) Alas, those glowing reviews for the film didn’t translate into commercial success. In fact, the film pretty much disappeared from theaters as fast as it arrived. Thanks to its arrival on Kanopy, audiences now have a second — or, really, first — chance to give it the attention it deserves.
