Box office: Spider-Man Brand New Day chases record second weekend

Last weekend belonged to Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opened to a record $360.1 million and helped push the domestic box office to its biggest three days ever at $436.6 million. This weekend, Peter Parker gets a shot at a second record.

Sony and Marvel’s blockbuster is forecast for $145 million to $160 million in its sophomore session, which puts the all-time second-weekend record squarely in range. Star Wars: The Force Awakens holds that mark with $149.2 million from 2015, followed by Avengers: Endgame at $147.4 million in 2019.

A few things are working in Peter Parker’s favor. Word of mouth is excellent — the film is sitting at 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter with a 4.1 average from Letterboxd users — and there is no direct competition in the marketplace. Brand New Day also picks up Imax screens and showtimes this weekend, though the exact footprint has not been confirmed.

The film has been collecting records all week. It posted the biggest Monday in domestic history with $47 million, then the biggest Tuesday ever with $42 million. Its five-day domestic total stands at $449 million, making it the fastest film ever to $400 million stateside, in four days. Worldwide, it crossed $1 billion faster than any movie except Endgame and now sits above $1.1 billion, making it the highest-grossing release of 2026 to date. Its $706.3 million overseas haul is also the year’s biggest.

Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey should hold second place in its fourth weekend with a forecast range of $30 million to $45 million. Universal’s epic dropped just 43.3% last weekend against the Spider-Man onslaught, an unusually strong hold, and passed $405 million domestically as of Monday.

That sets up a milestone of its own. The Odyssey will pass The Dark Knight Rises and its $448.2 million final domestic total this weekend to become Nolan’s second-highest-grossing film ever in North America. Only The Dark Knight and its $535 million stand ahead of him now. Globally, the film should cross $1 billion in the same stretch.

The Odyssey hands most of its Imax digital locations over to Spider-Man this weekend, but all 41 of the 70mm IMAX screens worldwide remain locked to Nolan’s film through September. There are also major territories still to come, including China, South Korea, and Japan.

Universal’s One Night Only is the biggest of this weekend’s new arrivals, opening at roughly 3,000 theaters with a forecast range of $5 million to $9 million. Will Gluck directs the fantasy romantic comedy, which stars Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner as two New Yorkers helping each other find a partner on the one night a year when premarital sex is permitted. Gluck previously turned Anyone but You into a sleeper hit with $88.3 million domestically and $219.8 million worldwide.

Searchlight’s Super Troopers 3 lands at about 2,700 locations with a range of $5 million to $9 million. The previous installment opened to a surprising $15.1 million in 2018, though it had the benefit of a 4/20 release date.

Rounding out the top five should be Toy Story 5, which added $6.2 million last weekend and has grossed more than $464 million domestically. Pixar’s sequel remains the year’s top domestic earner for a few more days before Brand New Day takes the crown. Minions & Monsters and the live-action Moana, which held the fourth and fifth spots last weekend, are both in the mix just behind it.

Just outside the top five, Eli Roth’s Ice Cream Man opens at roughly 1,700 theaters through Iconic Events with a forecast of $1 million to $2 million.

Several limited releases also arrive. Mubi has Jane Schoenbrun’s Cannes-winning Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, and A24 opens the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony in New York and Los Angeles before expanding nationwide on August 21. Magnolia debuts Willem Dafoe’s drama Late Fame in New York, and Roadside Attractions releases the Sundance documentary Cookie Queens.

Here are Gold Derby’s predicted box-office rankings for the top five over the Aug. 7-9 weekend:

1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day — $150 million
2. The Odyssey — $40 million
3. One Night Only — $9 million
4. Super Troopers 3 — $8 million
5. Toy Story 5 — $5 million

Check back Sunday for actuals and how they stacked up against our predictions.
