Last weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, peppered among the cosplayers decked out as Marvel and DC characters, more than a handful of attendees were festooned in the kind of pagan, deer-antler headdresses that might cause some qualms.
But conventioneers up on Apple TV‘s new horror-comedy Widow’s Bay undoubtedly recognized the costumes as odes to Kate O’Flynn’s character, Patricia, the breakout star of the freshman series.
And headgear wasn’t the only place where Widow’s Bay was making an unexpected cameo. Even outside of the showrunners panel, which featured creator Katie Dippold getting praise heaped upon her by the likes of Damon Lindelof and Greg Daniels, the Simpsons panel had showrunner Matt Selman and creator Matt Groening discussing Widow’s Bay as required viewing for the writers room, where show staff would regularly discuss the latest episode before getting to work on their own.
These may seem like diffuse examples of fandom across a specific weekend in one American city, but when it’s San Diego during the Comic-Con, it’s indicative of a larger cultural movement.
Without ratings as reliable as they were during the pre-streaming era, television phenomena have been harder to qualify until something like the Emmy Awards come around, when industry votes are tallied up and the most popular programs and performances take home trophies, and outside of a Nielsen-rated monoculture, surprises can happen.
Widow’s Bay earned the most nominations of any new series and the third-most overall, just behind Best Series favorites The Pitt (returning after a victorious Season 1) and Hacks (ending after five Best Comedy Series nominations and one win).

But Widow’s Bay has something on its side that its biggest competition, Hacks, lacks — the thrill of loving a new TV show. The HBO Max series starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder has largely maintained a high standard of quality across its run and, by most accounts, stuck the landing on its final episode. That’s a rare achievement for any show, especially one as highly decorated as Hacks already has been, and it’s a compelling argument for recognizing the final season, which bears out in the Gold Derby predictions.
What makes Widow’s Bay so dangerous in terms of awards competition for Hacks is that it’s untested on the circuit, and come Emmys night, we’re going to find out just how popular the Apple TV horror-comedy really is within the industry, not just at Comic-Con.
Matthew Rhys currently holds a healthy lead over his closest competition in Best Comedy Actor, Martin Short, but a category where Widow’s Bay seems primed for the upset is Best Supporting Comedy Actress. As the headdresses at Comic-Con suggest, O’Flynn’s Patricia was a revelation, greatly assisting in how quickly the show caught and the degree to which viewers became cosplaying fans. Einbinder is a former winner, but unlike Smart, she’s been proven beatable.
