Prime Video Scores Major NHL Rights Deal in Massive 12-Year Agreement

Prime Video is adding another major sports property to its growing lineup of live events. On Tuesday, Amazon announced that Prime Video has secured a new long-term NHL rights package in Canada through a 12-year agreement with Rogers Communications.

Beginning with the 2026-27 season, Prime members in Canada will be able to stream national Wednesday Night Hockey games in English and French, along with select Stanley Cup Playoff series, at no additional cost. The deal gives Prime Video’s NHL on Prime at least 26 national regular-season NHL games each season and further strengthens Amazon’s position in live sports as it continues to invest in premium rights around the world.

“Our partnership with Prime Video builds on the strong foundation we have established together and reinforces NHL hockey as the most valuable sports content in Canada,” said Tony Staffieri, President and CEO, Rogers, in a statement. “As Canada’s home of hockey, Rogers is committed to connecting more fans to more NHL hockey and delivering more national games with fewer blackouts on Sportsnet, Canada’s #1 sports media brand.”

“Over the past two years, Prime Video has been a valuable addition to the NHL’s media lineup in Canada, joining Rogers in bringing marquee NHL games to Canadian fans,” said Gary Bettman, Commissioner, NHL. “We’re excited that Prime Video and Rogers are deepening their relationship through this long-term agreement, reflecting our shared commitment to serving English and French-language hockey fans across Canada with premium NHL content for years to come.”

While Canada Gets Prime Video, All Eyes Now Turn to the NHL’s U.S. Media Rights

While this agreement applies to Canada, it comes as NHL fans across North America are already navigating major changes to how they watch hockey.

In the United States, the collapse of FanDuel Sports Network has forced several teams to find new homes for local broadcasts ahead of the upcoming season. Some organizations are launching their own regional sports networks, others are moving games to free over-the-air television, and the NHL has created a centralized production hub to help teams transition to new distribution models.

The changes mean fans of teams like the Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators, and Detroit Red Wings will be watching games on entirely different channels than they did just a year ago.

The timing of Amazon’s announcement is also notable because the NHL’s current U.S. national media rights agreements are already approaching the halfway point. ESPN/ABC and TNT Sports are under seven-year deals that run through the end of the 2027-28 season. Once those contracts expire, the league will once again have an opportunity to reshape how fans watch nationally televised games.

Streaming services are expected to play an even bigger role in those future negotiations. Prime Video already carries Thursday Night Football in the United States, has expanded its NBA coverage internationally, and continues to add premium sports rights around the globe. Landing this long-term NHL package is another sign that Amazon remains committed to becoming a major destination for live sports.

“We’re thrilled to expand our partnership with the NHL and Rogers in this landmark agreement, which brings even more premium live sports to Prime members in Canada,” said Jay Marine, Head of Global Sports, Prime Video. “When combined with our hit original series, blockbuster movies, and fast, free shipping on millions of items, the Prime membership is more valuable than ever for Canadian customers.”

For cord cutters and fans of the ice, hockey continues to move toward a more streaming-first future. Between teams finding new local broadcast homes in the U.S. and Amazon securing a long-term national package, the way fans watch the NHL is continuing to evolve, with streaming becoming a larger piece of the puzzle each season.
