Some movies are just too stylish to stay locked away in the past. This timeless story has already proved that once, with the 1968 Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway original giving way to the Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo remake three decades later. Now, almost another 30 years have passed, and one of Hollywood’s biggest stars is preparing to put his own stamp on the gentleman thief.
Michael B. Jordan is taking over the title role for a new version of The Thomas Crown Affair, and audiences finally have their first proper look at what he’s been cooking up. The first trailer has officially arrived, introducing Jordan’s take on Thomas Crown and the glamorous world of crime, wealth and romance surrounding him.
Jordan is also flexing his creative muscles again, because he’s been the driving force behind the entire project. Not only is he leading it as the titular thief, he’s also stepping behind the camera to direct, making The Thomas Crown Affair his second feature as a filmmaker following 2023’s Creed III.
Alongside Jordan, the cast includes Adria Arjona (Man of Tomorrow), Kenneth Branagh (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Danai Gurira (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), Aiysha Hart (Mogul Mowgli), and Peyton Alex Smith (All American: Homecoming).
What Is ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ About?
This is the third version of The Thomas Crown Affair made for the big screen. The original Norman Jewison movie from 1968 saw McQueen star as millionaire businessman Thomas Crown, who orchestrates an elaborate robbery before finding himself pursued — and increasingly attracted to — insurance investigator Vicki Anderson, played by Dunaway.
In 1999, John McTiernan turned it into an audacious and very sexy art heist movie, which went on to become a massive box office success and landed right in the middle of Brosnan’s hot streak as James Bond, with the suave role landing right in his wheelhouse at the time. Jordan now faces the interesting challenge of reinventing the premise once again for a completely different era, while serving as both its leading man and director. Considering the property has already successfully transformed itself once before, there’s plenty of precedent for another Thomas Crown getting away with it.
The Thomas Crown Affair opens on May 3, 2027.
