MasterChef Season 16 Episode 10 recap: Wheel of Fusion

Tonight’s episode of MasterChef throws the Top 15 into uncharted territory with a brand-new challenge: the Wheel of Fusion. Each team must blend an assigned global cuisine with their own cultural background, testing their adaptability under pressure. But it’s Julia’s advantage from last week’s win that turns the challenge on its head, setting up a shocking double elimination. Judges Gordon Ramsay, Tiffany Derry, and Joe Bastianich are on hand to taste the results.

The Challenge

As the reigning winner of last week’s challenge, Julia watches the action unfold from the safety of the balcony. The judges explain that the home cooks are being pushed out of their comfort zones — for most of the competition, they’ve leaned on flavors they know well, but tonight that changes with the Wheel of Fusion. Not every cuisine on the wheel is straightforward, prompting Shompa of Team Asia-Pacific to ask, “What the hell is Australian food?”

Each team sends a representative to spin the wheel: Basia lands Japanese fusion for Team Europe, Aishu lands French fusion for Team Asia-Pacific, Jake lands Nigerian fusion for Team Americas, and Rita lands Greek fusion for Team Africa.

That’s when Julia’s advantage comes into play. As the challenge winner, she has the power to reassign any team’s fusion cuisine to a different country of her choosing. She targets Team Africa, stripping Rita’s Greek fusion and swapping it for Australian fusion instead.

With the challenge set, each team has one hour to create a standout fusion dish. The home cook with the best dish wins the immunity pin and protects their entire territory from elimination. Any team whose dish falls short lands in danger of going home.

Top Dishes

Aishu (Asia-Pacific)
Dish: Indian Spiced Coq au Vin with Saffron Pomme Puree and Cilantro Oil
Gordon: “It’s a refreshing take. It’s delicious.”
Tiffany: “It has so much flavor. I love the level of spice.”
Joe: “It has the plating of a home dish, but in all the right ways. This makes my mouth water.”

Aghata (Europe)
Dish: Arroz Negro with Tuna Tataki and Miso & Ginger Aioli
Gordon: “I love what you did with the squid ink in the rice. The tuna — delicious.”
Tiffany: “It’s lovely.”
Joe: “It’s a restaurant-level fusion dish.”

Peter (Africa)
Dish: Wattleseed & Beer Battered Cod with Plantains, Ata Dindin Sauce, and Yaji Spiced Tartar Sauce
Gordon: “Absolutely spot-on.”
Tiffany: “I love that you stuck to your roots of Nigeria, but embraced the Australian influence.”
Joe: “Quite frankly, I am shocked that you made this. It’s kind of incredible.”

Maria (Americas)
Dish: Suya Spiced Lamb Shank with Yucca Mash
Gordon: “The lamb is cooked beautifully. This is exceptional.”
Tiffany: “It pops, it’s got spices, you’re not trying to mask the flavor of lamb.”
Joe: “It came out perfect. You took one of the biggest risks and you nailed it.”

Winner

The winner of this challenge is Maria. She will have immunity in the next challenge and the entire Americas team is safe from tonight’s elimination.

Bottom Dishes

Shompa (Asia Pacific)
Dish: Frog Leg Tomato Bhuna with Bhorta Puree and Salad with Chili & Shallot Vinaigrette
Gordon: “The dish is underwhelming. There’s no spice at all.”
Tiffany: “I don’t love the presentation. The frog legs are broken down.”
Joe: “This dish went wrong with the frog legs, which you’ve never cooked before. You couldn’t save it.”

Basia (Europe)
Dish: Miso Glazed Cod with Parsnip & Beet Puree, Yuzu Beurre Blanc and Chive Oil
Gordon: “Sadly it looks a mess.”
Tiffany: “This Japanese-Polish fusion isn’t working. [The] ingredients didn’t make sense.”
Joe: “You didn’t follow the rules — and it shows.”

Rita (Africa)
Dish: Herb Crusted Lamb with Vegemite Jollof Rice and Fried Plantain
Gordon: “The lamb is very dry. You panicked by not letting the lamb rest.”
Tiffany: “The best part is the plantains. Rice has spice, but not a whole lot of other flavor.”
Joe: “Visually, this dish doesn’t capture the essence of a Nigerian-Australian fusion.”

Elimination

The judges decided to eliminate Rita and Shompa from the competition.

“I’ve been dreaming about baking in the MasterChef kitchen since I was a kid,” Shompa shared. “I can’t believe I made my dreams come true.”

Rita added, “I’ve learned a lot. I’m going to continue to do what I love doing. Coming here and representing my country meant so much to me.”

Next time

Love is in the air. The Top 13 compete in a “royal wedding” team challenge, as MasterChef: Dynamic Duos winners Jessica Bosworth and Jesse Rosenwald get hitched! Each team will cook for half of the wedding guests — but the pressure to deliver leaves some out in the cold.
