Jon Hamm‘s American Hostage will have its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the prestigious Primetime Program spotlighting TV series and documentaries.
Based on the acclaimed audio drama podcast of the same name, the psychological thriller anthology series is scheduled to debut this fall exclusively on MGM+.

THE PLOT
Set in the 1970s, American Hostage chronicles the harrowing, real-life story of Fred Heckman (Hamm), a beloved Indianapolis radio reporter whose life is upended during a live broadcast. Heckman is thrust directly into the center of a dangerous life-or-death hostage crisis when Tony Kiritsis (Giovanni Ribisi), an enraged man holding a mortgage executive hostage with a shotgun wired to his neck, demands to be interviewed live on Heckman’s popular radio news program. The story was previously dramatized in the Gus Van Sant film Dead Man’s Wire, which played at last year’s TIFF.
THE CAST
Alongside Hamm and Ribisi, the series stars Mireille Enos as Fred’s wife, Barbara. Rounding out the main ensemble are Kristoffer Polaha, William Jackson Harper, Jonathan Tucker, and Kat Cunning.
WHO’S BEHIND THE CAMERA
The series is co-created by Emmy nominee Shawn Ryan (The Shield, The Night Agent) and Eileen Myers (Masters of Sex, Hung). The executive producers are Ryan, Myers, Hamm, Connie Tavel, Marney Hochman, Sharon Hoffman, Shawn Christensen (who wrote and directed the original podcast), Gabriel Mason, Adam Arkin, and Nina Lopez-Corrado. Adam Arkin (Get Shorty) and Nina Lopez-Corrado (Supernatural) serve as series directors.
WHEN CAN I WATCH IT?
Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, American Hostage will premiere this fall on MGM+ in the U.S. and Crave in Canada.
