2026 Emmys: Why casting wins could boost The Pitt, Widow’s Bay, Beef

When it comes to predicting the Emmy series races, awards pundits always keep a close eye on the casting categories.

Over the past 12 years, the winners for Drama Series and Drama Casting have matched eight times; Comedy Series and Comedy Casting have aligned nine times; and Limited Series and Limited/Movie Casting have mirrored each other 11 times. That adds up to a combined accuracy rate of 78% across the three contests.

Last year, the bellwether held true, as all three casting winners went on to claim the top series prizes: The Pitt in drama, The Studio in comedy, and Adolescence in limited.

With that in mind, our attention now turns to the 2026 Emmy casting races, where Season 2 of The Pitt, freshman horror-comedy Widow’s Bay, and the second helping of Beef are already making strong cases as front-runners.

Best Drama Casting

The Pitt won the casting category last year despite only three ensemble members being nominated: Noah Wyle, Katherine LaNasa, and Shawn Hatosy. They all won. This year, there are a whopping 13 stars in contention for the medical show, with the aforementioned trio joining Patrick Ball, Gerran Howell, Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif, Sepideh Moafi, Ernest Harden Jr., Jeff Kober, Brittany Allen, Tal Anderson, and Tina Ivlev.

With such a dominant showing in the nominations, it seems like a no-brainer that The Pitt will win the casting race again. Indeed, it has a 94% shot of claiming victory, per the Gold Derby odds, with its closest competitor being Pluribus at 3%. Notably, even though that Vince Gilligan show has a much smaller cast, it still managed to secure five acting nods: Rhea Seehorn, Karolina Wydra, Carlos-Manuel Vesga, Miriam Shor, and Jeff Hiller.

The other nominees in Best Drama Casting are The Diplomat, Paradise, and Slow Horses.

Widow’s Bay has taken the early lead in the casting race for comedy, and for good reason — it received six acting nominations in its initial at bat: Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Dale Dickey, Stephen Root, Betty Gilpin, and Hamish Linklater. The Apple TV horror hit is the only first-year comedy nominated for casting, which, if recent history is an indication, gives it an additional boost since The Studio, The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Ted Lasso, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel all won casting for their rookie seasons.

While Widow’s Bay currently enjoys a 79% shot at winning casting, Hacks is still very much in this race at 17%. In fact, it has the most acting nominations for a comedy this year, at nine: Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, Megan Stalter, Paul W. Downs, Cherry Jones, Laurie Metcalf, Kaitlin Olson, Lauren Weedman, and Christopher McDonald. The farewell factor could also come into play, as it’ll be the last chance for voters to reward Hacks with a casting victory — a trophy it has never won before.

The other nominees in Best Comedy Casting are Only Murders in the Building, Abbott Elementary, and Shrinking.

Best Limited/Movie Casting

The limited-series races are typically where you can find the most movie stars and A-listers, and this year is no exception. Odds leader Beef (at 66%) is represented by acting nominees Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Youn Yuh-jung, and projected runner-up DTF St. Louis (at 25%) is up for Jason Bateman, David Harbour, Linda Cardellini, Richard Jenkins, and Joy Sunday.

Proving that the 2026 Emmys are a who’s-who of Hollywood, the other three contenders in Best Limited/Movie Casting also have big names nominated: Sarah Pidgeon and Constance Zimmer for Love Story (7%), Sarah Snook and Dakota Fanning for All Her Fault (3%), and Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys for The Beast in Me (1%).

See who wins the casting categories when the Creative Arts Emmys take place Sept. 5–6 at the Peacock Theatre.
