So is The Odyssey based on a true story? It’s a headier question than you might think!
Christopher Nolan‘s new film The Odyssey lovingly adapts Homer’s epic poem for a modern audience. The Ancient Greek values of xenia and nostos are reframed for 2026 as Zeus’s Law (or the Golden Rule) and the pain of returning home with PTSD. The all-powerful king Agamemnon (Benny Safdie) dons sleek black armor that looks more like Batman than Bronze Age Mycenae and it’s unclear if the goddess Athena (Zendaya) is really visiting Odysseus (Matt Damon) if she’s a hallucination born out of guilt and trauma.
All of which to say, Nolan’s The Odyssey was made in the true spirit of the Homeric poem, which has been passed on from bard to bard, translator to translator, across the ages to every corner of the world. Over the years, great artists and philosophers have expanded upon the text. The Roman poet Virgil retold the story of the Fall of Troy from the Trojan’s point-of-view in The Aeneid and Irish author James Joyce borrowed its structure to follow a day-in-the-life in Dublin for both his literary alter ego Stephen Daedalus and iconic fictional character Leopold Bloom in Ulysses. But is there a root story that is the true story? Is The Odyssey based on a true story?
Here’s what you need to know about the real history that may have inspired The Odyssey and why this is a more complicated question to answer than you might think…
Is The Odyssey Based on a True Story?
No, The Odyssey is not based on a true story. It is based on an Ancient Greek poem that was originally passed down in the bardic tradition, meaning it wasn’t even originally written down. Bards — think a mix of scholar and entertainer and cultural custodian — would memorize every single line of all 24 books of the Odyssey and recite these for audiences. Because of this oral tradition, there are some modern historians who debate if there even was a Homer. In fact, we’re not even sure when it was composed, though the best bet is some time in the 8th or 7th century BC. By the 6th century BC it was definitely part of the Ancient Greek literary canon.
So The Odyssey is based on a very old work of fiction. That said, there are details found within The Odyssey that line up with several major historical events…
The thing you have to understand is that The Odyssey has always been a period piece, even for the Ancient Greeks who first circulated it around camp fires and banquet halls. The Odyssey recounts the end of the Trojan War, a legendary conflict between the Achaeans, a loose confederation of Bronze Age Greeks, and the Trojans. There is historic evidence to extrapolate that the “Fall of Troy” and, subsequently, of Agamemnon’s Mycenae, correlate with the sudden collapse of the Bronze Age. Christopher Nolan makes a very heavy-handed choice to have Odysseus explicitly tease the coming fall of the Bronze Age to Penelope (Anne Hathaway) towards the end of The Odyssey. (Yes, the Sea Peoples were real and they are a mysterious group of people who attacked Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean at this time.) So we know that something major happened around the time of the legendary Trojan War that devastated the area and plunged the Greeks into a sort of dark age.
While some of the more mysterious locations in The Odyssey may not exist, places like Sparta, Ithaca, and Mycenae definitely do and were definitely power players in the Bronze Age — specifically Mycenae. Tradition long held that the ancient city of Troy was somewhere in the Dardanelles, aka the Strait of Gallipoli, a narrow natural waterway that connects Europe and Asia. However, for a long time, scholars assumed Troy didn’t exist. Then in the 1870s, amateur German archeologist Heinrich Schliemann excavated ample evidence of ancient cities built upon each other over the centuries in the exact area. The problem was that Schliemann’s biggest discoveries dated before the Bronze Age (and he kind of ruined the site with his brutish methods).
All of this is to say, there’s no concrete evidence that there was once a guy named Odysseus who took forever in getting home, but we can probably assume that there were bitter battles waged between the powerful Bronze Age Greeks — particularly the Mycenaeans — and whoever lived in the extremely well-positioned city Schliemann discovered in modern-day Turkey.
