James Gunn got an unexpected shoutout during Thursday night’s live episode of Big Brother — and it led to the filmmaker revealing that one of Season 28’s houseguests almost wound up in his next DC movie.
After Survivor alum Rick Devens cast his vote to evict, he gave Gunn a nod during the live broadcast. Gunn later shared the clip on Threads, where fans quickly began asking about the pair’s connection.
One fan wondered whether Devens would appear in Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel. Gunn didn’t leave much room for speculation, replying, “No because he’s on Big Brother! Otherwise he would have been.”
As the conversation continued, another user asked if the two actually knew each other. Gunn confirmed they do and explained that Devens had originally been set to appear in Man of Tomorrow, but had to back out after landing a spot on Big Brother.
“We do,” Gunn wrote. “He was gonna appear in the background of MoT but he had to cancel (his awesome wife and kids still came). He couldn’t tell me why but told me I’d be excited. Obviously I was!”
So while Devens won’t be making a cameo in Metropolis, he has bigger things on his plate this summer: competing for the $750,000 grand prize on Big Brother Season 28. The cast also includes Angela Murray, Ashley Trail, Barrett Pfeiffer, Chuck Anyanwu, Drew Campbell, Haley Thogmartin, Jason de Puy, Kamuela “Kamu” Kirk, LaTrice Verrett, Lyric Medeiros, Mallory Aurichio, Melody Morris, Rome Seymour and Taylor Brown.
Man of Tomorrow will follow Gunn’s blockbuster Superman, which opened to $125 million domestically before becoming the first DC film since 2022’s The Batman to top the $300 million mark at the domestic box office. David Corenswet is set to return as the Man of Steel when the sequel hits theaters on July 9, 2027.
