Details are slowly coming into focus on the industry’s favorite low-key, high-altitude festival. The Telluride Film Festival — where A-list stars and filmmakers stroll casually through a picturesque Colorado mountain town — has long served as an unofficial gateway to the fall awards season.
To kick off this year’s festivities, organizers announced Thursday that Rebecca Hall has been tapped as the guest director. The British-American actress, writer, and director will select a series of six classic films to present at the 53rd edition.
“This will be my first time at Telluride,” Hall said in a statement provided to Gold Derby. “But I’ve been hearing tales of this annual utopian film community for years, always alongside sentences like ‘the one filmmakers love the most.’ Your favorite film festival’s favorite film festival. The one where you get to watch more films than promote them. I always hoped I’d get to come with a film, so to get to bring six films feels like an incredible act of generosity on the part of the universe. I can’t wait to watch all of them with you.”
Films expected this year
Telluride is famously tight-lipped about its lineup, traditionally keeping the official program on lockdown until the day before the festival begins. While the full slate won’t be revealed until early September, several notable awards contenders have been rumored to make their debut, including Tony Gilroy’s Behemoth! and Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut.
A proven launchpad for awards season
If past years are any indication, the 53rd lineup will serve as a major launchpad for the next Oscars. Last year’s festival successfully propelled major contenders into the race, including Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, and Jafar Panahi’s It’s Just an Accident.
Festival dates
The 53rd Telluride Film Festival will run Sept. 4–7.
