Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie is an absolutely beautiful show to behold. Almost every single scene is shot on location in the middle of a pristine prairie or in a log cabin built right under a tapestry of twinkling stars. But where was Little House on the Prairie filmed? Did the Netflix show travel, like Laura Ingalls (Alice Halsey) and her family, to the wilds of Kansas for their filming locations?
“We filmed in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Beautiful, friendly Manitoba,” Crosby Fitzgerald, who plays Caroline “Ma” Ingalls” on Little House on the Prairie, told DECIDER. “Every day was truly as beautiful as it looks in the show.”
So, no, Little House on the Prairie didn’t shoot in Kansas. In fact, the all-American show didn’t even film in the USA! Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie show filmed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Nevertheless, the show’s stars still felt transported.
“I mean, we’re really riding a wagon into the sunset and that’s us on the wagon doing that, and each day that we got to kind of be within the prairie and sort of feel…” Fitzgerald said, before turning to co-star Luke Bracey, who plays Charles “Pa” Ingalls. “We were just saying how I would look over sometimes between takes, we’d be like, ‘Where is Luke? I can’t find him. He had dragged a rocking chair out by a river just to sit by the river and take it all in. But I don’t know, it really adds to the whole experience, I think.”

Bracey then credited Crosby and their pint-sized co-stars Alice Halsey and Skywalker Hughes — who play Laura and Mary, respectively — for enduring more in the elements than he did.
“Crosby and the girls do incredibly well because they’re wearing corsets and eight thousand layers of clothing and it’s very, very hot out there some days,” Bracey said.
“Kept the bugs away, though,” Fitzgerald pointed out.
“Kept the bugs away,” Bracey repeated. “But yeah, just being in those elements as an actor, selfishly, it makes the job so much easier because you can feel a breeze on your face. You can feel the bug, you feel the sunshine, you could feel the cool breeze. Being on a stage is kind of stale and you can get tired easily on a stage because there’s no atmosphere, literally no atmosphere, and so I always prefer, even if it might be uncomfortable, I much prefer to be out there.”
“And as Crosby said, the views we get, I remember sitting there going, ‘They better be getting this on camera because it’s absolutely beautiful,’” he joked.

Bracey and Fitzgerald then revealed that there’s a line in the very first episode — uttered by Warren Christie‘s Mr. Edwards — that became a sort of mantra for the cast and their relationship with the show’s locations.
“I have a conversation with Edwards and he has this line which is, ‘Have you ever seen such a sky?’ And we still say it to each other,” Bracey said.
“Have you ever seen such a sky?” Fitzgerald said.
“Every day out there we just go, ‘Have you ever seen such a sky?’” Bracey said. “It’s so true. It is absolutely stunning out there. It’s a beautiful place to go to work. We’re just fortunate that the people are just as beautiful as the place that we get to work with. So it’s wonderful.”
