On Thursday, the new Little House on the Prairie reboot, based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s ‘Little House’ books, premieres on Netflix. The new series is described as “part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West.”
But before the reboot, there was the original Little House on the Prairie.
About the Original Little House on the Prairie Series
The original Little House on the Prairie series premiered in 1974 and ran through 1983. The series begins with Charles and Caroline Ingalls, together with their daughters Mary, Carrie and Laura, the narrator, as they head west and struggle to survive in 1870s Minnesota.
The series borrowed storylines from the book series, but deviated greatly to give the show enough drama and heartfelt moments to continue for nine seasons and over 200 episodes.
Michael Landon starred as Charles Ingalls, Karen Grassle played Caroline Ingalls, Melissa Gilbert played Laura Ingalls, Melissa Sue Anderson played Mary Ingalls, and twins Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush played Carrie Ingalls.

You can also watch the series for free on Pluto TV’s dedicated Little House on the Prairie channel. The channel features all nine seasons of the series, with episodes playing in order 24/7.
How to Watch the Little House on the Prairie Reboot
Little House on the Prairie will debut on Netflix on July 9. Showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine says that the reboot will be more closely aligned with the book series, which she grew up reading.
When asked what the first season of the new series is about, Sonnenshine told Netflix’s Tudum: “It’s about people deciding who they want to be and looking for a better life. It leans into the idea that it’s never too late to do that. You always have a chance to reinvent and rediscover who you are — what means something to you, what kind of people you want to be, what kind of adventures you want to take, what kind of life you want to seek.”
The series was renewed for a second season ahead of the Season 1 premiere.
