Jason Bateman has been on an Emmy roll over the last decade.
After his first two Emmy nominations for Arrested Development in 2005 and 2013, he has earned a whopping 12 nominations since 2018 for Ozark, The Outsider, and Lessons in Chemistry in various roles as an actor, director, and executive producer. This year, he can add five more bids in four different categories for two of his limited series in contention: Black Rabbit and DTF St. Louis.
The Emmys first recognized Bateman for the Fox cult sitcom in the middle of Arrested Development’s short-lived three seasons, and then again eight years later for the first of two revivals, back when he was mostly known as a comedic performer.
But since his role in Ozark, he has expanded his brand to more dramatic roles while wearing more creative hats, resulting in 10 Emmy nods throughout its four seasons. Bateman won his first and only statuette as a director for the show’s second season in 2019. He would later nab a guest actor nomination for the psychological mystery series The Outsider in 2020 and was cited as part of the producing team for the miniseries Lessons In Chemistry in 2024.

Now with his Netflix crime thriller Black Rabbit and his HBO dark comedy DTF St. Louis, Bateman is on the Emmy ballot five times: Best Limited Series for both shows as a producer, Best Limited/Movie Actor for Black Rabbit, Best Limited/Movie Supporting Actor for DTF St. Louis, and Best Limited/Movie Directing for Black Rabbit (“The Black Rabbits”).
In this popular voting era, where most of Bateman’s nominations and win have occurred, it is common to name-check someone on the ballot due to popularity and respect — and he has certainly paid his dues, having previously garnered noms from all three categories in various genres. This year in particular, the limited series genre is arguably the most unpredictable field, so it could be bound for a myriad of surprises.

As for Black Rabbit, Bateman is also in sixth place for Best Limited/Movie Actor with 19% in a category that will just have five actors. He did nab an Actor Award nom earlier this year in a similar five-person group that combines lead and supporting, but the competition is much different now.

As for the show itself, Black Rabbit sits down in ninth place with just a 4% chance, so that nomination is perhaps the least likely. Although there are no odds for the directing race, Bateman’s sole Emmy win in this category demonstrates the branch’s respect for him.
It is all but guaranteed that Bateman will make an appearance — likely multiple times — when the Emmy nominations are revealed on Wednesday.
