In the wake of the strong streaming performance of the film Project Hail Mary on Amazon Prime Video, subscribers now have another outstanding movie from the same author ready to watch at no extra cost through their Prime membership. The Martian, the 2015 adaptation, delivers a comparable mix of hard science, realistic problem-solving, and compelling character focus that has drawn audiences to both projects.

You can find The Martian on Amazon Prime Video HERE or watch Project Hail Mary again on Amazon Prime Video HERE.

The author, Andy Weir, was born on June 16, 1972, in Davis, California, and grew up in Livermore, California. His father worked as a physicist at a national laboratory while his mother worked as an electrical engineer. From an early age, Weir developed a deep interest in space science and technology. He built a long career as a software engineer while writing science fiction stories on the side and sharing them online. His breakthrough came with the novel The Martian, which he first released in serialized form on his personal website before self-publishing it as an ebook in 2011. A major publisher acquired the rights in 2014, turning it into a bestseller. The success allowed Weir to leave his engineering role and become a full-time author. He later released Artemis in 2017 and Project Hail Mary in 2021, establishing himself as a prominent figure in hard science fiction known for stories grounded in accurate scientific details and protagonists who rely on knowledge and creativity to overcome dire situations.

The novel The Martian follows an astronaut stranded alone on the surface of Mars after a mission accident. Using his expertise in botany and engineering, he devises practical ways to secure food, water, and shelter while working toward eventual rescue. The 2015 film version directed by Ridley Scott stars Matt Damon in the central role. Released in October 2015, the movie earned widespread praise for its tense atmosphere, light humor, and careful attention to scientific principles. It achieved strong box office results and received multiple Academy Award nominations, including recognition for sound editing and visual effects. The story emphasizes human resilience and the application of real-world science in an extreme environment.

Project Hail Mary, the 2021 novel by Weir, presents a science teacher who awakens on a distant spaceship with memory loss. He gradually recalls his involvement in a high-stakes mission tied to a threat against life on Earth and must apply scientific reasoning to address the crisis. The film adaptation directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and starring Ryan Gosling opened in theaters on March 20 2026. It proved a major commercial success, grossing over six hundred million dollars worldwide, and earned high approval from critics and audiences for its engaging blend of spectacle, emotion, and scientific concepts. The movie arrived on Prime Video for streaming on July 3 2026 after its theatrical run.

Viewers drawn to the scientific detail, character-focused storytelling, and hopeful tone in Project Hail Mary will discover similar strengths in The Martian. Both films feature lone individuals confronting life-threatening challenges through ingenuity, resourcefulness, and collaboration, whether with Earth-based teams or unexpected allies. They stand out for their commitment to plausible science rather than pure fantasy while delivering satisfying narratives about determination and problem-solving. Weir’s own background in software engineering and longstanding fascination with space topics help give both stories their distinctive authenticity and appeal.

Amazon Prime subscribers can stream The Martian now as part of their standard membership benefits. This convenient access makes it easy to watch both movies in sequence for an extended exploration of two memorable tales from one of the most popular contemporary science fiction authors. The pairing highlights the consistent strengths in Weir’s work across different scales, one centered on planetary survival and the other on interstellar stakes. Interest in space-themed stories remains high, and these adaptations continue to attract new viewers while rewarding repeat watches with their clever details and uplifting messages.

The presence of The Martian on Prime Video alongside the recently added Project Hail Mary gives members an excellent opportunity to enjoy high-quality science fiction without additional expense. Both productions showcase strong performances, thoughtful production values, and plots that celebrate human capability in the face of overwhelming odds. With these options readily available, the platform offers a straightforward way to dive into the imaginative and scientifically grounded worlds created by Andy Weir.
