Netflix is looking to bring one of baseball’s most iconic movie figures back to the cornfields. According to a new report from Front Office Sports, which comes from an interview with Elle Duncan of Netflix Sports, the streamer is actively trying to land Kevin Costner for its upcoming MLB Field of Dreams Game, which Netflix will broadcast as part of its expanding live sports package.
Costner famously starred as Ray Kinsella in the 1989 classic Field of Dreams, and his presence at the original MLB Field of Dreams Game in 2021, where he walked out of the cornfield to introduce the teams, became one of the most memorable moments in modern baseball presentation.
Speaking about the possibility of bringing Costner back, Duncan told Front Office Sports:
“Netflix always makes a really compelling pitch. So I’m certainly hoping that he’ll want to be a part of it in some kind of way. Because he is the face of the Field of Dreams and I know he’s still a really big baseball fan. So hopefully we can get him.”
Bringing Costner back into the moment would be a powerful full-circle connection between the original film and the modern MLB event, recreating the magic that was on FOX during the 2021 event.
Netflix’s Field of Dreams Broadcast Plans
Scheduled for Thursday, August 13, the 2026 Field of Dreams Game between the Twins and Phillies will be part of Netflix’s first full season as an MLB rights holder. The streamer’s package includes:
- MLB Opening Night
- Home Run Derby
- Field of Dreams Game
And Netflix is building a broadcast team that leans heavily into personality-driven coverage. Reported on-air talent includes:
- Elle Duncan (host, former ESPN SportsCenter anchor)
- Barry Bonds (analyst)
- CC Sabathia (analyst)
- Hunter Pence (analyst)
- Anthony Rizzo (analyst)
- Matt Vasgersian (play-by-play)
- Lauren Shehadi (reporter)
Duncan will also lead Netflix’s on-site coverage from Dyersville, Iowa, continuing her role as a key face of Netflix’s live sports push.
The Cornfields Might See Kevin Costner Again
The big question now is whether Netflix can convince Costner to join them on the field once again. The actor is an instrumental figure who bridges Hollywood and MLB’s modern marketing strategy. His role in Field of Dreams turned a simple baseball story into a cultural landmark. The film follows an Iowa farmer who builds a baseball diamond in his cornfield after hearing a mysterious voice, ultimately creating a supernatural reunion between generations of players.
More importantly, the movie helped turn the actual Iowa site into a real-world baseball destination. For many fans, the 2021 MLB Field of Dreams Game wasn’t just a stadium gimmick; it was fiction becoming reality. Costner’s entrance through the cornfield is still one of MLB’s most replayed pregame moments.
With the late summer matchup between the Twins and Phillies in Dyersville, Netflix is testing whether streaming can own live sports storytelling. Earlier this season, MLB’s Opening Night broadcast on the platform delivered record-level streaming engagement, reinforcing that baseball still draws major audiences when presented on digital-first platforms. That performance has become a key proof point that live sports can thrive outside traditional TV.
For Netflix, Field of Dreams is the perfect showcase:
- nostalgic IP
- cinematic presentation potential
- a built-in emotional hook
- and a Hollywood star tied directly to the brand
If Costner appears during the MLB’s special event, it’ll be another chapter in one of baseball’s most unique crossover stories between film and real life.
