Disney’s live-action remakes have been struck by a bout of declining returns, and the pressure is on for the studio’s upcoming movie to perform. If there were a safer bet, this would be it. However, there’s no telling how audiences will react to what they’re presented with next month. In the last few years, Disney has seen its pipeline of live-action remakes be infected by poisonous rhetoric, usually surrounding themes and casting choices. While the Alice in Wonderland and Beauty and the Beast remakes were able to gross more than $1 billion each at the global box office, the more recent The Little Mermaid and Snow White remakes weren’t as successful. The latter movie grossed just over $200 million worldwide against a reported budget of $336 million.
Now it’s the turn of Disney’s live-action Moana remake to steady the ship. The movie comes only a decade after the original animated release scored terrific reviews and grossed nearly $700 million worldwide. Featuring Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho, the original Moana was nominated in the Best Animated Feature category at the Oscars, and now holds a “Certified Fresh” 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website’s consensus reads, “With a title character as three-dimensional as its lush animation and a story that adds fresh depth to Disney’s time-tested formula, Moana is truly a family-friendly adventure for the ages.”

Here’s When To Watch Disney’s Live-Action ‘Moana’ Remake
The original Moana became a streaming sensation on Disney+, prompting the studio to put together a direct sequel. Moana 2 was released theatrically in 2024; the movie was an even bigger box-office hit than the first installment, grossing more than $1 billion worldwide. The live-action remake has been directed by Thomas Kail, a theater director best known for his work with Lin-Manuel Miranda. While Johnson is back as Maui and Miranda is back with new original songs, the titular character will be played by Catherine Laga’aia. The live-action Moanais slated for a July 10 release, one week before Universal debuts Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey, and three weeks before Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
