Spoiler alert: Do not read until you’ve watched the series finale of The Bear.
“As you wish.”
With those three words, The Bear paid homage to the late Rob Reiner in the most fitting way possible.
Reiner had a memorable Season 4 guest-starring role in the series as restaurant consultant Albert Schnurr, brought on to advise the team. He becomes a mentor to Ebraheim (Edwin Lee Gibson), encouraging him to turn the famed “The Beef” sandwiches into a franchise business. Ebra spends most of the final episode nervously fretting about how to pitch his idea to Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), but Carmy gets the idea instantly: “Go get ’em!”
After the team tours a potential location, Ebra calls Albert to deliver the good news. “Albert, we are in business,” he tells him. “It’s perfect. I will have all the documents, email it to you immediately. Anything else I can do?”
And then as an unheard Albert responds, “As you wish,” Ebra answers — a poignant reference to The Princess Bride, one of Reiner’s classic films.
Gibson recently recounted his time spent on set with Reiner for an interview with The Standard, saying they had immediate chemistry. “All those days that Rob and I spent together were a lot of fun,” he said. “I got to be his last scene partner, unfortunately … but it was just really, really great moments with someone that you grew up watching in front of the camera then behind the camera.”
Gibson said Reiner was intended to be a part of the final season. “We fully expected him to be there,” he said. “[It] changed a bit the trajectory of the story.”
