Curry Barker’s Obsession is easily one of the most interesting phenomena in the world of cinema this year. Purchased by Focus Features out of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, a feature written and directed by a 26-year-old YouTuber is currently the fourth-highest-grossing movie of the year domestically and generating buzz around a possible awards campaign for its scene-stealing breakout star, Inde Navarrette.
But even as the internet has (appropriately) obsessed over the indie horror blockbuster, there’s at least one question that seemingly hasn’t been answered yet.
Is Tim Robinson in Obsession?
As some Redditors have already noticed, the co-creator and star of I Think You Should Leave and The Chair Company appears on the film’s IMDb cast list as “Background,” which would suggest that Robinson is hanging out somewhere inconspicuous in the frame — possibly in a restaurant scene, slopping up a steak.
There was some evidence that made the cameo plausible beyond the credit. A quick Google turns up an interview with Culture in which Barker shared that he previously reached out to Robinson for reasons unknown and that they ended up exchanging messages at least.
But aside from the IMDb credit and DMs, there didn’t appear to be any information suggesting that the cameo was real, so while speaking with Robinson and his Chair Company director of photography Ashley Connor, we asked him.
“No,” Robinson said, when Gold Derby asked him at the end of May. “I haven’t even seen it.”
So there’s an answer, straight for the source. Whether that keeps obsessives from combing through every frame of the movie when it hits digital on June 30 is another question entirely.
