Sony 3000 Pictures and Spyglass Media have released the official trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun, starring Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams and more.
Based on the bestselling novel from Nobel Prize-winner Ishiguro and written and directed by Oscar winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit), Klara and the Sun introduces audiences to Klara (Jenna Ortega), an Artificial Friend (AF) who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home. Viewers also get a glimpse of Natasha Lyonne’s character, a shopkeeper of sorts, encouraging Klara and her peers, who are an older group of AF models, that they can still find homes despite the rapid advances in technology making them outdated.
“If I do get chose, how will I know if my person and I are a good match?” Klara asks Lyonne’s Store Manager, who tells her “Just remember everything you learned and hopefully they’ll come to love you like a member of the family or family dog.”
Josie (Mia Tharia), picks Klara even though she is an older model and outdated, as Josie’s mother (Adams) tells her, not wanting to spend money on the robot. But Josie thinks Klara’s special.
“And she’s odd special,” Store Manager Lyonne says in front of a ruffled Klara, hair tousled. “20% off!”

When Klara meets Josie each immediately senses a kindred spirit in the other. Josie has a fraught relationship with her mother (Adams) and they’ve suffered great loss, but Klara’s innocent wonder and unwavering loyalty begin to heal the family and bring light to Josie’s complicated world. Klara address the “Glorious Sun” and uses it to recharge. Josie’s mother threatens Klara saying she’s still “under warranty” and that they can always send her back to the store. When something happens to Josie, her mother and nurse shut the door on Klara.
“Afs are like a blank canvas,” Ortega’s eager, wide-eyed Klara says. “We come out of the lab with the intelligence of a toddler, and then we learn everything from our humans.”
As she slides down the staircase on her stomach, Josie’s nanny or nurse calls Klara “an imbecile.”
Waititi wrote the screenplay with Dahvi Waller, based on Ishiguro’s novel, which published in March 2021. The film is produced by David Heyman, Garrett Basch and Waititi. Executive producers include Gary Barber, Alex G. Scott, Jeffrey Clifford, Rosie Alison and author Kazuo Ishiguro.
Aran Murphy, son of Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, stars alongside Ortega, Adams, Tharia and Lyonne. Steve Buschemi also appears, and he can be seen in a glimpse in the trailer.
Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, some violence and strong language, Klara and the Sun hits theaters October 23.
