Australian documentary “Shared Table: Regional Heroes” has been acquired by Cinepolis India for a limited theatrical release later this year, following the film’s world premiere in the international competition section of the 19th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF).

Directed by Melbourne-based Indian-Australian filmmaker Nandita Chakraborty, the documentary follows a group of filmmakers on an improvised road trip across regional Victoria, tracing the lives of four migrant communities who open their homes and kitchens to explore questions of identity, displacement, and cultural memory through food. It is the only Australian film selected for MIFF 2026.

Cinepolis is serving as distributor, which means that the release is not limited to their screens.

“We are delighted to partner with Indian-Australian director Nandita Chakaborty and producer Niru Tripathi on their documentary ‘Shared Table: Regional Heroes’ for its theatrical release in India following its World Premiere in MIFF’s Competition section,” said Devang Sampat, managing director of Cinepolis India. “‘Shared Table: Regional Heroes’ is a deeply human documentary that celebrates community, identity, diversity, inclusivity and the universal language of food.”

The film is produced by CALD Community Voices and Tripathi, with support from the Victorian Government. Chakraborty, who was born in Kolkata and migrated to Australia in 2000, is a recipient of the Victorian Multicultural Award for Excellence in Arts (2023). Her previous documentary, “Piquancy: Silent Heroes,” also received Victorian Government support.

“As an Indian-Australian filmmaker, I am thrilled that ‘Shared Table: Regional Heroes’ is releasing theatrically in India, the country of my birth,” Chakraborty said. “The film shines a light on inspiring stories from regional Victoria – voices often overlooked in conversations dominated by Australia’s major cities.”

Tripathi added: “This film reminds us that every community is strengthened by the diversity of its people. I hope audiences are inspired by these remarkable individuals and leave with a greater appreciation for the human connections that unite us across cultures, backgrounds, and generations.”

The MIFF premiere was attended by Australian Deputy Consul General Christian Jack as guest of honor. Following its India run, the documentary is scheduled for its Australian premiere at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival.
