Sweet Magnolias loses original cast member ahead of season 5

Sweet Magnolias season 5 is nearly here, but there is one original member of the show’s cast fans won’t be seeing back in Serenity when the new season drops on June 11.

After four seasons playing Tyler “Ty” Townsend on Netflix’s beloved family drama, Carson Rowland has exited Sweet Magnolias and will not return for season 5. Rowland’s exit was first confirmed by Us Weekly, who broke the news that the original member of the cast made the decision to step away from the show ahead of its fifth season.

Interestingly, this seems to be a decision that was made by Rowland and not the creative team of the show. Rowland’s co-star Anneliese Judge revealed to Us Weekly that he chose to step away to pursue other opportunities.

“He had some other opportunities that I’m really excited for him about. He’s a really, really good friend of mine, and so that’s something that’s really exciting for him and for all of us. We’re all still so supportive of him.”

While Rowland’s exit is unexpected, the show had laid the groundwork for Ty to potentially exit the show at the end of season 4. As season 4 drew to a close, Ty was preparing to head to Europe to tour with his band, and he asked Annie to defer college for a year to come with him to Europe.

It’s clear that Ty proceeded with his plan to leave Serenity to head to Europe to tour and this will likely be used to explain his absence in the upcoming season. What will be interesting is to see how the show explores the fallout of his departure, which is something that showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson has confirmed will be a big part of the season ahead.

“In his leaving, we wanted to make the best of the situation and look at what happens when people leave the people they love to chase a dream.”

We’re certain this is going to be a big part of Annie’s storyline in season 5. Knowing that Annie will return, it seems safe to assume that she did not choose to go with Ty to Europe, which creates a question of what it means for their relationship and future. After Ty and Annie finally confessed their feelings for each other, fans were hoping to see the pair get a chance at happiness in the new season, but that sadly will not be happening.

It’ll be interesting to see if the show decides to explore the pair trying long-distance, at least as the season opens, and keeping Ty’s presence felt through one-sided letters, calls, and texts. It’s also possible that the show will explain at the top of the season that Annie and Ty acknowledged that while they care deeply for each other, they ultimately realized they want different things and deserve to chase their respective dreams.

Ty’s departure also means that we sadly won’t get to see the show explore his sibling relationship with Isaac after the truth about him being Bill’s biological son comes to light. It’s a shame we won’t get to see the half-brothers connect and figure out their relationship in the new season, but it does have us hopeful that this is something we will get to see through Isaac and Kyle’s storyline in the season ahead. With Ty no longer in town, we’d love to see Kyle lean on Isaac as an older brother and get to see that sibling dynamic explored.

While Rowland will not appear in season 5, there is always hope that he’ll return down the line should Sweet Magnolias return for a sixth season.
