2026 Drama League Awards winners, Tony analysis

Death of a Salesman and Ragtime continue to assert their dominance in the spring theater awards season, emerging as the big winners from the 2026 Drama League Awards. Ragtime topped the winners list with three awards: Outstanding Revival of a Musical, Outstanding Director of a Musical for Lear deBessonet, and the coveted Distinguished Performance Award for Joshua Henry. The actor has held a formidable lead in Lead Actor in a Musical category in Gold Derby’s Tony prediction center, and a win with the Drama League helps further cement his status as a frontrunner as Tony voters prepare to cast their ballots.

The Distinguished Performance Award is arguably the most unique category of any theater awards body: it is a giant catch-all acting category, and once a performer wins it, they are never eligible again. Managing to win an acting category over 53 of your peers, as Henry has just done, is no small feat. And whoever wins this race often goes on to claim a Tony Award. Last year, Nicole Scherzinger won the Drama League for Sunset Blvd. before picking up her Best Actress (Musical) prize at the Tonys.

Similarly, Sarah Paulson won both the Distinguished Performance Award and a Tony the year prior for Appropriate. Other recent Drama League winners who followed in those footsteps include Danny Burstein (Moulin Rouge!), Bryan Cranston (Network), Glenda Jackson (Three Tall Women), Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen), and Neil Patrick Harris (Hedwig and the Angry Inch).

The Drama League Awards is also the only Tony precursor where Ragtime went head-to-head with its biggest competition, Cats: The Jellicle Ball. Unlike some other groups, the Drama League allows Broadway transfers of off-Broadway productions to compete in both years for which the show is eligible. The vogueing felines currently lead Gold Derby’s Tony odds for Revival of a Musical and Director of a Musical, but the sweeping emotion of Ragtime prevailed in both corresponding Drama League categories.

Death of a Salesman — the assumed front-runner in the play revival race at the Tonys — picked up two prizes: Outstanding Revival of a Play and Outstanding Director of a Play for Joe Mantello, though it should be noted that Mantello didn’t have to face any of his fellow Tony nominees in this category. Liberation’s Whitney White and Oedipus’ Robert Icke are still formidable Tony contenders according to Gold Derby users. But after back-to-back wins with both the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama League, Mantello has a serious edge.

Liberation also added another win to its tally this season, adding an Outstanding Production of a Play statuette to its list of achievements alongside a Pulitzer Prize. But if there was any hope that the Drama League would provide clarity in a tight Tony race for Best Musical, they were quickly dashed. While Tony nominees The Lost Boys, Schmigadoon!, Titanique, and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) were all up for this win, voters instead chose to honor Mexodus, a two-person hip hop musical making waves off-Broadway. The Tony race for Best Musical remains a toss up.
