Get ready to venture into the dark side of the California dream. After tracking the production of Netflix’s East of Eden over the past couple of years, we finally have a solid release window. While we previously reported that the series was eyeing an early 2026 launch based on comments from the cast and crew, Netflix has officially confirmed that the sweeping family saga will debut in Fall 2026.

This is one of many announcements and reveals expected throughout today, May 13th, as Netflix presents its slate to advertisers in New York as part of the Upfronts. The main presentation is due to take place at 2 PM ET.

The seven-episode limited series is an ambitious adaptation of the 1952 Nobel Prize–winning novel by John Steinbeck. If the title sounds familiar, it’s not just because it’s a literary staple—it’s also a towering piece of cinematic history. The new take on the classic novel continues the legacy of writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner Zoe Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, who directed the legendary 1955 East of Eden film starring James Dean.

“In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me,” Kazan previously shared in a statement when production kicked off in New Zealand in late 2024. “But it is Steinbeck’s writing — personal, shocking, profound, and free — that has kept me enthralled by East of Eden since I first read the book as a young teen.”

Here’s the first look trailer:

What is East of Eden about?

If you skipped American Lit in high school, East of Eden follows the multi-generational saga of the Trask family. However, Netflix’s fresh adaptation promises a compelling twist: the story will be explored primarily from the perspective of the novel’s standout female character, the notoriously complex Cathy Ames, played by Florence Pugh (Dune: Part Two, Oppenheimer, Midsommar). Pugh is also attached to the project as an executive producer.

Who is in the cast of East of Eden?

Florence Pugh is leading what is arguably one of the most stacked television casts Netflix has assembled in recent years. Here’s the full confirmed cast list and who they are playing:

  • Florence Pugh (We Live in Time, Little Women) will play Cathy Ames
  • Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, Catch-22) will play Adam Trask
  • Mike Faist (Challengers, West Side Story) will play Charles Trask
  • Hoon Lee (Warrior, Banshee) will play Lee
  • Tracy Letts (Winning Time, Ford v Ferrari) will play Cyrus Trask
  • Martha Plimpton (The Regime, Mass) will play Faye
  • Ciarán Hinds (Belfast, Game of Thrones) will play Samuel Hamilton
  • Joseph Zada (We Were Liars, Invisible Boys) will play Cal Trask
  • Joe Anders (Bonus Track, I Am Ruth) will play Aron Trask

Who is behind the scenes?

Alongside Zoe Kazan (Clickbait, The Plot Against America), Jeb Stuart (Vikings: Valhalla, The Fugitive) is on board as co-executive producer and co-showrunner.

Behind the camera, the limited series boasts some serious directorial talent. Garth Davis, best known for the Oscar-nominated film Lion and Mary Magdalene, has helmed Episodes 1 through 4. Meanwhile, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (The Mustang, Lady Chatterley’s Lover) stepped into the director’s chair to finish out the series with Episodes 5 through 7.

With production officially in the rearview mirror after its extensive shoot across New Zealand, the series is deep into post-production to prep for its newly minted Fall 2026 release. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as soon as we get an exact date, first-look images, and a teaser trailer.
