Following the massive global success of the hit Norwegian disaster series La Palma, Netflix has officially announced a standalone sequel titled Florida (working title). Coming to Netflix in 2027, the new four-part event series will bring the impending tsunami across the Atlantic.

Announced during the media conference Nordic Media Days in Bergen, the new mini-series will continue the “Scandisaster” craze that has proven to be a massive hit for Netflix.

Here is everything we know so far about Florida.

What is the plot of Florida?

Created by the acclaimed team behind The Quake (Skjelvet) and La Palma, the new series will pick up almost immediately after the events of its predecessor.

As a quick refresher, La Palma (which dropped on Netflix in December 2024) followed a Norwegian family vacationing on the Canary Island of La Palma who faced disaster when a researcher discovered signs of an imminent volcanic eruption.

Florida, per Netflix, is picking up just hours after the volcanic eruption on the island. The story will center on a Norwegian community in Florida (the United States, apparently, not the one that exists in Norway) that is currently completely unaware that a devastating tsunami generated by the eruption is barreling across the ocean toward them.

The new series is produced by Fantefilm, the production company famous for perfecting the “Scandisaster” genre with titles like The Wave, The Quake, and, of course, La Palma.

Cecilie Mosli (The Snowsister, Grey’s Anatomy) is set to direct all four episodes, with the script penned by Lars Gudmestad (La Palma, The Burning Sea). Lasse Greve Alsos and Jan Eirik Langøen will produce, alongside executive producer Martin Sundland.

Screenwriter Lars Gudmestad expressed his excitement for the follow-up, saying:

“To be able to make Florida is a dream I have had for a long time, and I am very pleased that Netflix also believes in the project. Our ambition is to create a spectacular disaster series with characters audiences can recognize themselves in and truly care about, and that’s why it’s so reassuring to have such a talented and experienced director like Cecilie with us on this journey.”

Director Cecilie Mosli added:

“People confronted with crises are the most fascinating starting point for drama. With La Palma, Lars Gudmestad, Fantefilm and Netflix demonstrated the power of combining large-scale disasters with intimate human stories, and I am very proud and happy to be part of the new project, Florida.”

How well did La Palma perform on Netflix?

It’s no surprise that Netflix was eager to greenlight a sequel when you look at the viewership data. Currently ranked as the 8th most-watched non-English TV title globally on Netflix of all time, the four-episode limited series has racked up a staggering 70.3 million views.

Released on December 12th, 2024, the TV-MA drama dominated the Netflix global top 10s through the holiday season, holding the #1 spot for its first two weeks. It even saw a surprising resurgence in the summer of 2025, popping back into the Top 10 for two consecutive weeks.

Here is a full breakdown of La Palma’s initial run in the Netflix Global Top 10 and its return:

1 Dec 8 to Dec 15, 2024 40,200,000 13,100,000 #1
