‘Avengers’ Director Joe Russo Says Spoilers Are ‘Over-Policed’

Joe Russo, one-half of the directing duo behind “Avengers: Doomsday,” recently told Metro that he thinks spoilers are “over-policed” online to the point that fans are scared to engage with any material surrounding a film before it hits the big screen.

“On one hand, audiences want to be surprised, and that’s part of what makes the theatrical experience exciting,” Russo said. “On the other hand, it can become a little over-policed, where people are anxious about engaging with anything.”

He added, “We design these films to unfold in a certain way, and we want audiences to feel those moments as intended. But at the same time, you can’t control everything. You have to focus on making something that holds up beyond the initial surprise.”

“Avengers: Doomsday” feels a bit like a soft reboot for the MCU, in that it’s Marvel’s way of returning to its days of box office glory after financial disappointments like “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts*” and “The Fantastic Four First Steps.” In that pursuit, Marvel has assembled a who’s who of franchise favorites, such as Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Letitia Wright (Black Panther) and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique). They even brought back Robert Downey Jr. as the big Bad Doctor Doom after he died as Iron Man in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

“Doomsday” is slated for release on Dec. 18. Russo and his brother, Anthony, will also co-direct the sequel “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which hits theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.
