Raye has been on the rise for some time, but her latest release, This Music May Contain Hope, has brought the British singer-songwriter into a superstar era. The album was released on March 27 and instantly met with great critical acclaim, scoring an aggregate 87 rating Metacritic. Strong sales followed. This Music May Contain Hope has remained on the charts, reaching No. 11 on the Billboard 200, and spawning the hit single “Where Is My Husband!” What makes Raye’s milestones stand out, however, is that she remains an independent artist — a huge feat at a time where major labels dominate every available format.
Raye’s story is one of resilience. She built her career as a songwriter, writing or co-writing with A-list artists, including Beyoncé, Charli xcx, John Legend, Ellie Goulding, Little Mix, and Madison Beer. She eventually began making headway as a performer and was signed to Polydor. However, after years of frustration with the label for limiting her creative freedom, she decided to take control of her career and release her music independently.
Over the past few years, she has achieved global success with acclaimed tracks like “Escapism” and “Prada” and now “Where Is My Husband!,” which has topped the charts in her native U.K. and climbed as high as No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Beyond the numbers and the reviews, Raye has a strong narrative that could elevate her Grammy chances in the General Field. She has bucked the system, struck out on her own path, and continues to champion originality and authenticity. Her success could resonate with Recording Academy voters, many of whom are artists without contracts or with little promotion.
A vote for Raye would represent a big win for independent artists everywhere. Indie artists understand the challenges in reaching an audience at scale and also being recognized by the Recording Academy. These artists lack the resources provided by major labels, especially when it comes to promotion. So far in the 2020s, only six of the 60 albums nominated for Album of the Year have been from independent labels: Un Verano Sin Ti and Debí Tirar Más Fotos by Bad Bunny; Djesse Vol. 3 and Djesse Vol. 4 by Jacob Collier; i,i by Bon Iver; and Black Pumas Deluxe by Black Pumas.
Although the historical data is stacked against her, Raye appears poised to break through. Based on Gold Derby prediction data, Raye ranks at the top of the three biggest awards: Album of the Year (No. 2 overall, with an 83% chance at a nomination), Record (No. 2, 89%) and Song of the Year (No. 1, , 88%), both for “Where Is My Husband!”

This Music May Contain Hope will be an important litmus test for the Recording Academy. While it won’t be the first time an artist gets nominated with an independent release, it would be the rare instance of a mainstream pop act achieving the feat. For Raye, the hope might not only be in the music, but also in the opportunities she will open up for other artists.
