Another soccer documentary is coming to Netflix before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, focusing on Argentine and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martínez, the hero of La Albiceleste at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Emi Martínez: The Kid Who Stops Time is coming to Netflix on May 28, 2026.

Emi Martínez: The Kid Who Stops Time is an upcoming Argentine Netflix Original sports documentary directed by Gustavo Cova. The series showrunner is Andrés Emilio, while Sergio Ferraro and Alejandro Greco are executive producers.

The documentary is produced by Argentine production company PEGSA, which previously produced Netflix’s documentary on Angel Do María.

When is Emi Martínez: The Kid Who Stops Time coming to Netflix?

Netflix has confirmed that Emi Martínez: The Kid Who Stops Time will be released globally on May 28, 2026. Just in time for the FIFA 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

Netflix has also released a trailer for the documentary.


What is the documentary about?

The documentary will chronicle the journey of the World Cup-winning Argentine and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martínez, from his youth dreaming of playing professional football to being the hero of Argentina in the last moments of extra time at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The documentary will combine animated sequences by Ricardo Liniers, archival footage, and interviews with the likes of Lionel Messi, Lionel Scaloni, and Miguel Ángel “Pepé” Santoro. The animation element of the documentary is inspired by Hernán Casciari’s short story “The Kid Who Stops Time”, which is about a boy who discovers he can argue with footballs and stop time.
