How much Anne Hathaway is too much Anne Hathaway? 2026 is here to answer that question, as the Oscar-winning actress has five movies coming over the next seven months, and a potential sixth arriving by year’s end. Of those, Mother Mary is currently in theaters, and the Devil Wears Prada 2 is looming. To keep up this week’s Anne-valanche, Amazon MGM Studios today gave us the first glimpse of Hathaway’s upcoming Colleen Hoover adaptation, Verity.
The teaser introduces the psychodrama ensnaring Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett, and promises, “There is no light where we’re going.” Buckle in!
So what exactly is Verity about? Who’s behind the adaptation? And does it have any shot at awards? Read on for everything we know about Verity.
The plot
Verity is based on the 2018 novel by the BookTok favorite. The studio describes the story like so:
Adapted from Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, this seductive, psychological thriller follows renowned author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) and Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who relocates to the remote Crawford estate to ghostwrite for Verity. After Lowen uncovers what appears to be Verity’s chilling autobiographical notes, she wrestles with the disturbing and twisted confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett), and finds it hard to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction, and opportunity from obsession.

Verity is the fourth Hoover adaptation in the past two years, following It Ends With Us (2024), Regretting You (2025), and Reminders of Him, which hit theaters in February. It will also be the fifth film of Hathaway’s jam-packed 2026, following Mother Mary (April 17), The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1), The Odyssey (July 17), and The End of Oak Street (Aug. 14). Provided it gets edited in time, a sixth film, Alone at Dawn (TBD), is also in play for an end-of-year release.
The cast and creatives
In addition to Hathaway, Johnson, and Hartnett, the film stars Ismael Cruz Cordova and newcomer Brady Wagner as Verity and Jeremy’s child.
The film is directed by Michael Showalter from Nick Antosca’s screenplay. Hathaway, Hoover, Showalter, Antosca, Alex Hedlund, Stacey Sher, and Jordana Mollick are listed as the producers. Johnson, Kerry Orent, and Lauren Levine are the executive producers.

Awards chances
While Hathaway is an Academy Award winner and Showalter directed Jessica Chastain to her Oscar win for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Verity, like most Hoover fare, is engineered to sell movie tickets (and lots of subsequent Prime Video streams), not win statuettes. While the collective box office for Hoover adaptations is almost $530 million worldwide, the three prior films have netted a total of zero nominations.
Sure, in a world where Glenn Close scored a nom for Fatal Attraction, we can’t completely rule out a delicious Hathaway performance turning some heads and crowning a year where she’s inescapable onscreen. But this feels at best like a potential Golden Globes consolation nomination; at worst, we could be in Razzie territory.
Release date
Verity arrives in theaters on Oct. 2, 2026.
