“I think I’ve worked with everybody in the room,” Meryl Streep said at the 2007 Golden Globes after winning for The Devil Wears Prada. She then put on her glasses, looked around the Beverly Hilton Ballroom, and determined, “Yes, I have!”
Twenty years later, Streep is a Globe contender yet again for playing boss-from-hell Miranda Priestly — this time in the highly anticipated sequel that arrives in theaters on Friday. The Hollywood icon already holds the record for the most Golden Globe nominations at 33, and she could nab No. 34 for her starring role in 20th Century Studios‘ The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The Devil Wears Prada was just one of her eight competitive wins, another record. She also took home Golden Globes for Kramer vs. Kramer at the 1980 ceremony, The French Lieutenant’s Woman in 1982, Sophie’s Choice in 1983, Adaptation in 2003, Angels in America in 2004, Julie & Julia in 2010, and The Iron Lady in 2012. Furthermore, the actress was honored with the esteemed Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2017 event.
During her memorable 2007 acceptance speech for The Devil Wears Prada, Streep singled out writer Aline Brosh McKenna for her “sparkling script” and director David Frankel for his “smart direction.” The actress also made sure to thank the film’s costume department: “That was like special effects for our movie.”
Streep proceeded to give one-word adjectives to her co-stars — “delicious” Emily Blunt, “darling” Anne Hathaway, and (jokingly) “dreadful” Stanley Tucci — who collectively had the “difficult” job of making her “seem monstrous” in her iconic role of the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. The main cast returned for The Devil Wears Prada 2.
As for why now was the right time to create the sequel after a two-decade break, McKenna told Gold Derby, “There were just so many changes in the world that we started to get interested in where these characters were, and what they were doing. And then we found out that Meryl was open to it. … My general motto in life is, ‘If Meryl Streep thinks it’s a good idea, I think it’s a good idea, too.'”

The original Devil Wears Prada received a pair of Oscar bids for Streep in Best Actress and Patricia Field in Best Costume Design. Besides Streep’s victory at the Golden Globes, the movie scored nods there for Best Film Comedy/Musical and Best Film Supporting Actress for Blunt. It also earned nominations at the Actor Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and BAFTA Awards, among others.
It has been nine years since Streep was last nominated at the Golden Globes for a film; she lost that bid for The Post to Frances McDormand for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Since then, she has been up twice for her TV work in Big Little Lies (losing to Patricia Arquette for The Act) and Only Murders in the Building (losing to Elizabeth Debicki for The Crown).
Golden Globe submissions for the 2027 ceremony aren’t due until the end of the year, but Gold Derby expects Streep will campaign in Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress, the same category she won 20 years ago. The ceremony will take place Jan. 10.
