Top Gun fans are still riding high following the news that both the 1986 original film and the 2022 legacy sequel are returning to theaters next month to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first Top Gun. The film is now scheduled to begin playing on screens around the same time that Guy Ritchie’s next movie, In the Grey, will also be rolling into theaters. While In the Grey has the star power of Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal behind it, it may get crushed at the box office during its first week in theaters as fans around the world feel the need for speed once more. Top Gun: Maverick is already one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, but now it’s going to have the chance to add to that total.
A few years ago, when Dune: Part Two hit theaters, its sandworm popcorn bucket started a craze that’s still ongoing to this day. Even movies like Project Hail Mary featured a space helmet popcorn bucket, while Deadpool & Wolverine used Logan’s face as the primary receptacle for the delicious snack. Popcorn buckets have come to be a defining feature of any movie’s theatrical run, and some could argue they’re an added reason to make a trip to the theater, if the bucket is cool enough, that is. Earlier this week, AMC Theaters unveiled its new popcorn bucket for the re-release of Top Gun: Maverick, which is designed after Maverick’s helmet from the original film. More theaters like Regal are sure to follow soon with designs of their own.

What Happens in the Top Gun Movies?
The first Top Gun, which was directed by the late Tony Scott, is set at the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School, where the best of the best train to refine their elite flying skills. When the hotshot fighter Maverick (Tom Cruise) is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots. In the sequel, Maverick returns to Top Gun years later when he’s called back to help teach a group of hotshot recruits — not unlike himself in the first movie — to fly a dangerous mission that may result in their death. A third Top Gun movie is in the works at Paramount, though it’s yet to be confirmed when it will be released or what it will be about.
