7 Years Ago Today “Avengers: Endgame” Was Released & Becomes Highest-Grossing Film in History

Seven years ago today, on July 22, 2019, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame achieved a monumental milestone, becoming the world’s highest-grossing film by surpassing James Cameron’s Avatar. The superhero epic, which concluded an 11-year saga known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Infinity Saga, grossed an astonishing $2.9 billion at the global box office, cementing its place in cinematic history.

The record-breaking announcement came just three months after Endgame’s theatrical release on April 26, 2019. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film was a cultural phenomenon, drawing millions of fans to theaters worldwide. Its box office triumph unseated Avatar, which had held the top spot for a decade with $2.789 billion.

Avengers: Endgame was the culmination of 22 interconnected films in the MCU, beginning with Iron Man in 2008. The movie followed the events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), where the villainous Thanos (Josh Brolin) wiped out half of all life in the universe with a snap of his fingers. Endgame picked up with the surviving Avengers, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), as they grappled with their loss and devised a plan to reverse Thanos’ actions.

The film introduced time travel as a central plot device, allowing the heroes to revisit key moments from earlier MCU films to collect the Infinity Stones and undo Thanos’ devastation. The Russo brothers masterfully balanced spectacle, emotion, and nostalgia, delivering iconic scenes like Captain America wielding Mjolnir and the massive final battle against Thanos’ army. The movie also marked pivotal moments, such as Tony Stark’s sacrifice and Steve Rogers passing the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).

Production for Endgame was a massive undertaking, with a reported budget of $356 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever made. Filming took place primarily in Atlanta, Georgia, alongside Infinity War, with additional shoots in the UK and Japan. The ensemble cast, featuring stars like Brie Larson as Captain Marvel and Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, added to the film’s draw.

Upon release, Endgame shattered box office records, earning $1.2 billion in its opening weekend alone. Critics praised its emotional depth and satisfying conclusion, though some noted its three-hour runtime as ambitious. The film’s cultural impact was undeniable, sparking global conversations and fan events.

The history of Marvel movies began in the late 20th century with early adaptations such as Howard the Duck in 1986 and the low-budget Captain America film in 1990, which failed to capture significant audience interest or financial success. In the early 2000s, independent studios produced more notable entries, including Blade in 1998, which launched a successful trilogy and helped establish the viability of comic book films, followed by X-Men in 2000, which introduced a more grounded and ensemble-driven approach to superhero storytelling and spawned multiple sequels and spin-offs. Spider-Man arrived in 2002 under Sony Pictures and became a massive commercial hit, further proving the genre’s potential and leading to additional sequels as well as the Hulk film in 2003. Marvel Studios was formed in 2005 with the ambitious goal of creating a shared cinematic universe, and in 2008 it released Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr., which was both a critical and box office triumph that laid the foundation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This interconnected series expanded rapidly with films such as The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger, culminating in the team-up event The Avengers in 2012 that shattered records and solidified the MCU as a dominant force in Hollywood. Over the following decade, the franchise grew to include dozens of films across multiple phases, introducing characters like Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel while achieving unprecedented global box office dominance through carefully planned crossovers such as Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the latter becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time. The MCU continued into the 2020s with new phases exploring multiverse concepts and fresh hero debuts, though it faced occasional criticism for formulaic storytelling amid ongoing releases like Shang-Chi, Eternals, and Deadpool and Wolverine, maintaining its status as the most expansive and commercially successful superhero film series in cinematic history.

Seven years later, Avengers: Endgame remains a benchmark for blockbuster filmmaking. Its record was briefly reclaimed by a re-released Avatar in 2021, but Endgame’s influence endures. The film’s success highlighted the MCU’s dominance and set the stage for future phases, introducing new heroes and stories. Fans still celebrate its iconic moments, from “Portals” to “I am Iron Man,” ensuring its place in pop culture history.
