It’s Official: ‘Virgin River’ Season 8 is Filming (and Martin Henderson is Back Directing!)

Virgin River is officially back! Season 8 began filming in Vancouver today, April 22. With a confirmed ten-episode order, production is scheduled to run through August 10. Showrunner and executive producer Patrick Sean Smith is returning, keeping Netflix’s longest-running drama in familiar hands.

The cast has been quietly trickling back to set over the past few weeks. Smith was among the first to tease the return on social media, while Alexandra Breckenridge and Zibby Allen have also posted updates from Vancouver. Meanwhile, Martin Henderson—who typically shies away from social media—is set to direct an episode in the first filming block. Fans will remember he previously stepped into the director’s chair for Season 6, Episode 8, to much acclaim. Audrey Cummings and Shannon Kohli are also confirmed to direct upcoming episodes.

Who’s Back and Who’s Out

Austin Nichols returns as Dr. Eli in a recurring capacity. Expect to see a lot more of him this season; Smith noted that Eli will bring “new energy” to the show, though he was quick to clarify that this won’t devolve into another love triangle.

Cody Kearsley is back as Clay, picking up his search for the sister he was separated from during their time in foster care. It’s not yet confirmed whether he’s been bumped up to a series regular.

Matty Finochio will also return as the mayor’s assistant, Tony, scheduling permitted.

As for departures, Marco Grazzini and Sara Canning are officially out, meaning we won’t be seeing Mike or Veronica. Lauren Hammersley has also exited the series. Charmaine’s arc reached a natural conclusion in Season 7, though it’s worth noting that neither she nor Grazzini got much of a send-off considering they’ve been around since the show’s early days. Finally, Rachel Drance and Nicholas Coombe (Marley and Eamon) are not expected to return.

Where Season 7 Ended

Marley went through with the adoption, but her baby was born with a congenital heart defect. This sent Mel and Jack rushing to a pediatric hospital in Los Angeles, only to be met by the attending surgeon: Eli, Mel’s former love interest from her Nurses Without Borders days.

Brady and Brie finally got back together, but joy quickly turned to panic when Brady crashed his motorcycle on his way to see her. His fate was left completely up in the air. Benjamin Hollingsworth has played coy in interviews about his return, though when we spoke with him previously, leaving didn’t seem like an option. Over the last few seasons, Brady has evolved into one of the show’s most compelling characters, occasionally carrying even more narrative weight than Jack himself.

Meanwhile, Preacher spent most of Season 7 pushing to expand Jack’s bar. When Jack made it clear he had no interest in changing what he’d built, Preacher pivoted, deciding to open his own restaurant instead. He asked Jack to buy out his share of the bar, and Jack agreed. The season closed on Preacher sitting alone with the unsigned contract in front of him.

Doc and Hope hit a major roadblock after Doc committed to a permanent partnership with Grace Valley Cares without consulting her. The decision stung, especially given everything Hope had fought for in Season 7—and the fact that another man in her life had recently made a massive decision behind her back. We got the full picture via Roland, her ex-husband, who revealed that Hope’s father hadn’t gone over her head out of arrogance, but to protect her. The family timber business was buried in debt, and he knew she would never have agreed to sell. The season concluded with a poignant moment: Hope scattering her father’s ashes in the river with Roland by her side.

Everything We Know About Season 8

Patrick Sean Smith has confirmed that Season 8 will kick off with a four-month time jump to skip past the immediate medical aftermath of the Season 7 finale. However, recent casting calls for neighbor roles suggest we’ll get some flashbacks to fill in the blanks. Thematically, Season 8 will explore sacrifice, haunting, and rebirth. According to the showrunner, Jack’s farm finally getting off the ground provides a literal anchor for that “rebirth” theme.

The heaviest emotional lifting will fall on Mel and Jack. Now, first-time parents to a baby with serious medical needs, the couple is in uncharted territory. Smith teased that Season 8 will delve deeply into the strain this high-stakes situation puts on a marriage, promising it won’t just be soft lighting and miracle recoveries.

Elsewhere in town, Denny will be navigating the medical school application process now that his MCAT results are in, and Lizzy is heading back to work.

We’ll also learn the true severity of Brady’s motorcycle accident. Given how central he’s become to the series, his storyline is easily one of the most anticipated arcs to watch this year.

Brie will continue helping Clay track down his sister—a brand-new character expected to debut this season. Clay will also be stepping up as Jack’s right-hand man on the farm.

Finally, in a surprising turn of events, Everett and Muriel seem to be heading toward an actual romance. After years of Smith firmly closing the door on the pairing during press tours for Seasons 5 and 6, this shift is a very noticeable change of pace. Plus, we’ll see Jack and Preacher’s friendship put to the test—we still need to find out if Preacher actually signed that buyout contract!

Lots more to come on Virgin River season 8 as and when we learn more. Filming is expected to wrap by August 10th, and is expected for a 2027 release.
