Barack & Michelle Obama Will End Their Movie & TV Partnership With Netflix This Year

Higher Ground Productions, the media company established by former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, is set to operate as an independent entity once its current agreement with Netflix concludes later in 2026, according to a report from Deadline. The move marks the end of an eight-year exclusive partnership that began in 2018 and transitioned into a first-look arrangement in 2024. While the company will maintain collaboration on several ongoing Netflix initiatives, it will now pursue opportunities across multiple studios and streaming services in a more flexible model.

Higher Ground launched with the ambition of championing stories that highlight diverse voices, foster empathy, and explore themes of American resilience, democracy, and moral responsibility. Over the course of its Netflix tenure, the production outfit delivered an impressive slate of 24 projects spanning feature films, television series, documentaries, unscripted programming, sports content, and family-oriented offerings. Among the standout achievements was the documentary American Factory, which secured an Academy Award. Other notable films included Rustin, earning an Oscar nomination for its lead performer, as well as Crip Camp, American Symphony, and the family-friendly series Waffles + Mochi and Ada Twist, Scientist.

Scripted endeavors also left a significant mark. Leave the World Behind, a thriller featuring an ensemble cast, climbed to the eighth spot on Netflix’s most-watched English-language films. Additional releases such as Fatherhood, starring Kevin Hart, and Worth, with Michael Keaton, demonstrated the company’s range in both dramatic and comedic territories. Higher Ground’s work has earned three Oscar nominations, including one win, along with 12 Emmy nominations and six victories, underscoring its influence in both cinematic and television realms.

The company has already ventured beyond Netflix in recent years, establishing projects at outlets including HBO, Apple, Amazon, FX, Disney, 20th Century Studios, and others. For instance, an upcoming half-hour sketch comedy series developed with Larry David and Jeff Schaffer is scheduled to premiere on HBO during the summer of 2026. Higher Ground maintains an active audio division featuring podcasts like IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, alongside a multi-part exploration of Reconstruction that connects historical events to contemporary American challenges. The company recently expanded into theater by co-producing a Broadway revival of the play Proof, which opened on April 18, 2026, with a cast including Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle.

The decision to embrace independence reflects a strategic evolution amid a rapidly shifting entertainment industry. With advancements in artificial intelligence and evolving viewer habits reshaping content creation and distribution, Higher Ground aims to maximize creative freedom by collaborating with a wide array of partners rather than committing exclusively to one platform. This approach builds on the foundation laid during the Netflix years, which served as a powerful launchpad for impactful storytelling. The Obamas have emphasized the importance of narratives that illuminate the nation’s strengths and ethical foundations, particularly in an era filled with technological distractions and political complexities.

Under the new independent structure, Higher Ground will continue developing and producing content while shopping projects to various buyers. Several initiatives remain in progress at Netflix, including the limited series All The Sinners Bleed, co-produced with Amblin and starring Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù and Nicole Beharie, as well as The Altruists featuring Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle. A second season of the docuseries The Later Daters is also slated for the platform. These ongoing commitments ensure continuity while the company broadens its horizons.

The transition arrives at a pivotal moment, coinciding with broader reflections on America’s 250th anniversary. During a recent public appearance at HistoryTalks in Philadelphia, Barack Obama discussed the company’s journey and its alignment with enduring values of democracy and human connection. Higher Ground’s representatives, working through agencies such as CAA, have expressed confidence that the independent path will allow for greater agility in selecting collaborators and reaching audiences through diverse channels.

The Obamas’ venture has already contributed award-winning work and innovative storytelling. This next chapter promises continued growth, with the potential to shape entertainment that not only entertains but also inspires reflection on society’s shared aspirations and responsibilities. With a proven ability to deliver high-quality programming across genres, Higher Ground stands poised to influence the industry for years to come, independent of any single corporate alliance.
