Classic ‘Law & Order’ is Coming to Netflix US Imminently

Dick Wolf’s flagship procedural is officially making its way to Netflix, and it looks like we might be getting a massive batch of episodes.

In a last-minute surprise addition to the April release roster, Netflix has struck a deal with NBCUniversal to bring the classic, original Law & Order series to the streaming platform for the very first time.

Episodes of the iconic courtroom and police drama will begin streaming this coming Monday, April 20th. International subscribers will have to sit this one out, however, as this licensed pickup is strictly for Netflix US for the moment, although you did get SVU a couple of years back.

A TV Institution: The Legacy of Law & Order

For the uninitiated—or those who just need a refresher—Law & Order isn’t just a television show; it’s the blueprint for the modern procedural. Premiering in 1990, the series ran for a staggering 20 consecutive seasons during its original classic run, entirely reshaping the television landscape and launching Dick Wolf’s sprawling procedural empire.

The brilliance of the show lies in its signature split format. The first half of the episode follows the NYPD homicide detectives who investigate the crime and apprehend the suspects. The second half shifts to the District Attorney’s office, focusing on the legal maneuvering and courtroom battles required to secure a conviction.

Over its multi-decade run, the series introduced us to legendary, defining TV characters, including Jerry Orbach’s wisecracking Detective Lennie Briscoe and Sam Waterston’s fiercely principled D.A. Jack McCoy. It’s the ultimate comfort binge, offering neatly wrapped (and often “ripped from the headlines”) cases in every single episode.

Which Seasons Are Coming to Netflix?

If you’re hoping to binge the entirety of the show’s massive catalog, the exact episode count is still slightly shrouded in mystery—but we have some major clues.

While Netflix initially announced they licensed a “batch of different seasons,” we did some digging. We have successfully found official title artwork housed within Netflix’s servers that specifically corresponds to Season 8 and Season 19.

Artwork within Netflix for Law & Order

Of course, we won’t know which seasons are coming until Monday, and we’ll keep you posted once we know more. Some of the longer-running licensed shows Netflix has picked up in the US and internationally as of late have been a selective batch of episodes rather than the complete catalog.

That’s already the case for Law & Order elsewhere. With Peacock, despite being NBCUniversal’s in-house platform, it only hosts a much smaller 9-season selection of the flagship show. Hulu remains the best place to stream, as the platform currently holds the complete 20-season classic run.

If Netflix’s deal brings over a dozen seasons of the show, it will be a massive competitive win for the platform’s licensed library.

A Long-Awaited Return for the Franchise

While this marks the first time the original flagship series will stream on Netflix, longtime subscribers will remember that the Dick Wolf franchise isn’t entirely new to the platform.

For years, its immensely popular spin-off, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU), was a major, heavily-binged staple of the Netflix US library. However, SVU was eventually pulled from the service entirely as NBCUniversal began clawing back its properties to bolster Peacock.
