Beyond the Spider-Verse’ Unveils First Look at CinemaCon

Miles Morales is still crawling through alternate realities in a thrilling first look at “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” that Sony Pictures released Monday at CinemaCon. The footage picks up immediately after the ending of “Across the Spider-Verse” with Miles trapped in another dimension with alternate versions of himself and his Uncle Aaron. As revealed in the previous movie, this new Miles G. Morales (voiced by Jharrel Jerome) is the high-tech villain Prowler instead of Spider-Man.

The footage, shown to CinemaCon attendees, boasted the vibrant, phantasmagoric imagery that made the previous “Spider-Verse” adventures so singular. The footage showed Miles tied up to a punching bag while being interrogated by Uncle Aaron and Prowler Miles creeping above on the ceiling. He jumps down and coldly introduces himself to Spider-Man Miles, who tries to explain that he needs to return to his original universe to save his father’s life. The two alternate versions of each other trade insults, but Spidey Miles charges up an electric venom shock and frees himself. He battles evil Miles and his uncle, and his allies from the previous two movies assemble to save him. They include Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, Spider-Noir, Peter B. Parker, Spider-Punk and two new men driving a getaway van over a rising bridge.

This chapter will conclude Miles’ three-film arc, so there’s a lot at stake. “Across the Spider-Verse,” which was released in 2023, ended on a cliffhanger, with the fate of his family hinging on his ability to navigate the multiverse. Resolving that narrative has taken longer than expected. The film was originally scheduled to be released in 2024, but got pulled from Sony’s release schedule due the actors strike preventing voice recording work, as well as other production delays associated with the time-consuming animation.

“Beyond the Spider-Verse” is directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by the writing team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (fresh off the success of “Project Hail Mary”) alongside David Callaham. The filmmakers teased that the threequel is the “final chapter of Miles’ story” and the most “emotional” and “spectacular” “Spider-Verse” film they’ve made.

Shameik Moore returns as the voice of Miles. The cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Greta Lee, Jason Schwartzman, Karan Soni, Daniel Kaluuya, Nicolas Cage and Jake Johnson. “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” is scheduled to swing into theaters on June 18, 2027.
