Two movies redefined superhero cinema forever in the year 2008. Coincidentally, both movies found spots on the domestic PVOD charts this week, as they prepare to celebrate their 18th anniversaries. Nearly two decades have passed since the films’ release, so audiences who remember seeing them in theaters may be surprised. Both movies complemented each other, primarily because they took diametrically opposite approaches to the genre. While one was a colorful, quip-a-minute throwback to the blockbuster cinema of the 1990s, the other was an epic crime drama modeled after Michael Mann’s Heat. The more accessible of the two is Iron Man,…

Released in 1940, Pinocchio was Disney’s second animated feature. It tells the story of the title character, a puppet made by the kindly Geppetto and brought to life by the Blue Fairy after he wishes upon a star. Jiminy Cricket, who witnesses the magic, is assigned as Pinocchio’s conscience as he is told he must be brave, truthful, and unselfish if he is to become a real boy. However, temptation makes his path more complicated. Boasting 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, it remains one of the best-loved Disney movies, because of its technical wizardry, its moral message, and its classic music.…

Though it was not entirely without precedent as the progenitor of faux-found-footage horror, few films have been more widely imitated than 1999’s “The Blair Witch Project” — if only because its premise was so, well, economical. With no pressing need for FX, sets, name actors or stunts, just about anyone could make a marketable knockoff. Unfortunately, almost everyone did, creating an overtaxed genre where mediocre, sometimes barely-watchable titles far outnumber the few inspired entries. A notch above-average on that narrow scale, but still falling a bit short, is Canadian actor Markian Tarasiuk’s feature directorial debut. “Hunting Matthew Nichols” earns points…

Whether it is a new series like The Madison starring Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer, or Marshals starring Luke Grimes, or more established shows such as the hugely popular Landman, Tulsa King, and Mayor of Kingstown, there’s no escaping the fact that Taylor Sheridan is the king of Paramount+. That being said, the man himself is now set to leave the streamer, officially heading the way of NBCUniversal under a massive long-term film and television deal. Will his shows still prove popular on the streaming site? Most likely, but it will be fascinating to see what happens in this next…

In an age where it’s far too common to conform to mediocrity and sell out, you have to respect Kevin Costner’s ambition. When he embarks on a new project, he goes for broke. In the case of Horizon: An American Saga, Costner put his money where his mouth was. The actor-director’s audacious vision can amount to unlikely triumphs like Dances with Wolves or grave follies like Waterworld and The Postman. But with each project, he always did it his way. With Horizon, we have yet to see Costner fulfill his vision due to the financial and critical disappointment of Horizon:…
