Toy Story 5: Trailer, plot, cast, release date for Pixar sequel

Bad Bunny is jumping into the animation game. The studio announced Tuesday the Grammy-winning singer will make a voice cameo in the upcoming Toy Story 5 as the new character Pizza with Sunglasses described as “effortlessly cool and mysterious, Pizza with Sunglasses is a member of a small but mighty community of forgotten toys that live in an abandoned backyard shed.”

Alan Cumming has also joined the voice ensemble in a cameo as Evil Bullseye – Bullseye’s playtime alter ego in the new film. They join the original gang which includes Woody the Cowboy (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen). The final trailer for Toy Story 5 finds Woody and Buzz reunited after a six-year absence and introduces a new antagonist for the toy pals: technology. As the toys face the tech devices of today, it’s going to be all hands on deck with some familiar and all-new characters.

Here’s everything you need to know about the return of Pixar‘s flagship franchise, which will take its theatrical bow on June 19.

What’s the (toy) story?

According to early details shared by the filmmakers, Toy Story 5 will explore the role of toys in an age dominated by screens. Bonnie, last seen as a young child in Toy Story 3, is now 8 years old and spending more of her time with a sleek new AI-powered tech tablet she has named Lillypad, voiced by Greta Lee. Bonnie’s growing attachment to the device has led to a gradual disinterest in her traditional toys, sparking an identity crisis among her former favorites.

Woody — who chose to live as a “lost toy” with Bo Peep (Annie Potts) at the end of Toy Story 4 — is drawn back into the fold as the situation with Bonnie escalates. His return reunites him with Buzz Lightyear, Jessie (Joan Cusack), and the rest of the gang. While details about the film’s central quest are still under wraps, the thematic undercurrents reflect a growing concern shared by many parents and creators: what happens to imagination when screen time takes over?

A sneak peek of the film’s opening scene was shown during a presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France. According to The Wrap, the scene begins with a first-person POV shot that mirrors the original Toy Story film — this time from the perspective of a Buzz Lightyear action figure waking up on a mysterious, deserted island. Surrounding him are dozens of other Buzzes, each outfitted with glowing LED screens. As they attempt to reestablish contact with “Star Command,” the sequence builds to a haunting yet playful campfire moment, where the Buzzes chant “Star Command” under the night sky.

Who’s in the cast?

Several familiar voices will return for the latest chapter, including Hanks, Allen, and Cusack, who will be joined by newcomers Ernie Hudson, who steps into the role of Combat Carl following the death of Carl Weathers, and Conan O’Brien, who lends his voice to a new character named Smarty Pants. Craig Robinson gives voice to Atlas, a cheerful talking GPS hippo toy; Shelby Rabara is the excitable camera toy Snappy; Scarlett Spears as the sweet and shy Bonnie; Mykal-Michelle Harris as Blaze, an independent 8-year-old girl who loves animals; and Matty Matheson as the tech-fearing toy Dr. Nutcase. Rounding out the voice cast are John Ratzenberger as the wisecracking piggybank Hamm; Wallace Shawn as Rex, the anxiety-riddled Tyrannosaurus rex toy; Blake Clark as the ever-loyal Slinky Dog; Jeff Bergman as the sarcastic Mr. Potato Head; Anna Vocino as the nurturing Mrs. Potato Head; Annie Potts as the adventure-loving Bo Peep; Bonnie Hunt as the wise rag-doll Dolly; Melissa Villaseñor as Karen Beverly, Bonnie’s homemade toy fashioned out of a plastic knife; John Hopkins as the dignified hedgehog plush toy Mr. Pricklepants; Kristen Schaal as the plastic Triceratops toy Trixie; Tony Hale as the spork Forky; and Keanu Reeves as Canadian daredevil toy Duke Caboom.

With Toy Story 5, Pixar is returning to its roots while asking timely questions about growing up, moving on, and the ever-changing definition of play. If early glimpses are any indication, the film aims to capture the emotional resonance that made its predecessors beloved by audiences of all ages, while reimagining what a toy’s purpose can be in a digital world.

Who’s behind the film?

Veteran Pixar director Andrew Stanton is at the helm with Kenna Harris joining as codirector, produced by Lindsey Collins (Turning Red, WALL•E, Finding Dory), and features an original score by Oscar winner Randy Newman who returns to score his fifth Toy Story feature.
