It’s time for a game night—and movie night.
Tonight’s Hallmark Channel premiere, All’s Fair in Love and Mahjong, is full of notable network stars, including Fiona Gubelmann and Paul Campbell, who lead the new movie as Ronni, a school nurse and mother, and Ben, a contractor.
All’s Fair in Love and Mahong centers on Ronni, who in the midst of becoming an empty nester, losing hours at work, and navigating the possibility of having to sell her home, she seeks out a way to turn her love of mahjong into a passion project and a profession. While Ronni has the support of her three friends and fellow mahjong enthusiasts, she also finds comfort in Ben, who is working through his own familial struggles.
Ahead of its premiere, the film generated a stir online when Hallmark released its first promotional images from the film; for a movie centered around a game with such strong ties to the Asian community, some lamented the lack of Asian representation in the primary cast. One of the actresses behind the four central women, Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe, is of Chinese and Scottish heritage. Derek Kwan, who is an Asian actor and a member of the All’s Fair in Love and Mahjong cast (see below), weighed in on the discourse in an Instagram video.
Hallmark issued the following statement to Entertainment Weekly in response to the backlash: “All’s Fair in Love & Mahjong is a love story with connection at its core, highlighting family, friendship, and motherhood with warmth and humor. The movie honors the heritage of mahjong by recognizing the game’s Chinese origin and its unique ability to connect cultures, generations, and communities.”
Before All’s Fair in Love and Mahjong premieres tonight at 8/7 c on Hallmark Channel (with next-day streaming available on Hallmark+), find out who stars in the new film below.
