The Dark Knight’s wheels are getting a winter upgrade.
Matt Reeves dropped what appears to be the first official look at production on “The Batman: Part 2” Thursday, posting a photo on X of what he captioned “#SnowTires 🦇” — a teaser image of the film’s Batmobile mid-camera test. The details of what exactly is going on in the image remain murky, but it’s clear that the long-gestating sequel is finally moving, and it’s set during winter.
Robert Pattinson is set to return as Bruce Wayne, joined by Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb (aka the Penguin), Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Barry Keoghan is also expected to appear once more as the Joker.
In the 2022 original, a younger, more psychologically raw Bruce Wayne (only two years into his vigilante career) got pulled into a dark, noir-tinged murder mystery when a serial killer called the Riddler (Paul Dano) began targeting Gotham’s elite and leaving ciphers addressed directly to Batman. The movie performed well, grossing $772 million worldwide against a budget of $185-200 million, making it the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2022.
The film has also landed a pair of high-profile new additions. Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson has joined the cast, playing Gilda Dent, wife to Gotham district attorney Harvey Dent. Sebastian Stan has since joined Johansson as the newest addition to Reeves’ Gotham City, with Stan set to play Harvey Dent. “Game of Thrones” veteran Charles Dance has also been added to the cast, believed to be playing Charles Dent, Harvey’s father.
Reeves co-wrote the script with Mattson Tomlin. “It’s been a long journey, but I am so incredibly excited. I’m really proud of the script me and Mattson did,” Reeves told Variety at the Emmys in September.
“The Batman: Part 2” is set to open in theaters Oct. 1, 2027.
