‘Berlin’ Returns: Full Trailer Drops With New First Looks, and Why Netflix Dropped “Season 2”

The countdown for the greatest heist in history is back on. Netflix has just dropped the official trailer, key art, and a fresh batch of stills for the highly anticipated return of the Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) spin-off, Berlin. But there’s a massive catch: Netflix isn’t calling it Season 2.

Hitting Netflix globally on May 15, 2026, the next chapter of Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato’s smash-hit series is taking us to Seville.

But if you load up your Netflix app right now looking for “Season 2,” you’re in for a surprise. In recent months, Netflix has quietly rebranded the first season to Berlin and the Jewels of Paris (Berlín y las joyas de París), and the upcoming eight-episode follow-up will officially be titled Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine (Berlín y la dama del armiño). The two titles sit as wholly separate titles within Netflix.

Before we dive into why Netflix is shaking up the naming convention, let’s break down the brand-new trailer and what we can expect from Berlin’s newest caper.

Money Heist Alumni Álvaro Morte And Patrick Criado To Star In Netflix’S ‘Nine Queens’ Series Adaptation

New Heist, New Gang Member, & A New Location

If Jewels of Paris was about romance and the thrill of the steal, Lady with an Ermine is much darker in tone and spirit and focused on one thing, revenge.

The new trailer gives us our first look at the gang back together—this time in the sun-drenched, historic streets of Seville, Spain. Berlin (Pedro Alonso) and Damián (Tristán Ulloa) have reunited the crew for a master heist: pretending to steal Leonardo Da Vinci’s iconic painting, The Lady with an Ermine.

Why pretend? Because the heist is a Trojan horse.

According to the official synopsis, the gang is hired by the powerful Duke of Málaga. However, the Duke and his wife think they can play and blackmail Berlin. Big mistake. Their challenge awakens Berlin’s absolute darkest, most vengeful side.

The core gang from the Paris heist is all returning, including Michelle Jenner, Begoña Vargas, Julio Peña Fernández, and Joel Sánchez.

But there are some fresh faces joining the fray, as previously announced. Inma Cuesta (The Mess You Leave Behind) joins as Candela, a brand-new gang member who is tipped to steal Berlin’s heart. Meanwhile, José Luis García-Pérez and Marta Nieto join the cast as the primary antagonists: the Duke and Duchess of Málaga.

The eight-episode series was filmed across several breathtaking Spanish locations, including Seville, Madrid, San Sebastián, and Peñíscola.

The Big Twist: Why isn’t Netflix calling this Berlin: Season 2?

So, what’s with the title change? Moving away from the traditional “Season 1, Season 2” format is a massive shift for a show of this size. Is it a stab at a new strategy?

We’ve seen a bunch of variations on renaming seasons from Netflix before. Furies in France recently returned for season 2, but with a season subtitle. Love Is Blind recently had all its seasons renamed after the location where each season takes place, but this wholly separate title within Netflix goes to a whole new level and is more akin to Ryan Murphy’s Monster anthology series that gets uploaded seperately, albeit they start fresh each season with a new set of characters and actors.

It is a well-known industry secret that viewership inevitably declines with each subsequent season of a TV show. New viewers are often intimidated by a “Season 2” or “Season 3” badge if they haven’t seen the first.

By packaging Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine as a distinct event series, it can attract brand-new subscribers who just want a fun, self-contained heist show without feeling like they have “homework” to do. It also suggests that if you missed out on season 1, Berlin and the Jewels of Paris, that’s not a barrier to diving in here.

Who is behind Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine?

Vancouver Media, the powerhouse production company founded by Álex Pina in 2016, is back at the helm.

Creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato lead a massive writing room for this installment, penning the scripts alongside David Barrocal, Lorena G. Maldonado, Itziar Sanjuán, Humberto Ortega, and Luis Garrido Julve.

Directing duties for the eight episodes are split between Albert Pintó (Nowhere), David Barrocal (Sky Rojo), and José Manuel Cravioto (Diablero).

Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine drops globally on Netflix on May 15, 2026. Here are all the other new stills that Netflix just dropped for the new season:
